What I hear a lot in the MCU is that Phil Coulson was brought back by fan willpower alone - but c'mon, it's Marvel. And Whedon.

It's not like it's the first resurrection ever.

The might have noticed the character was popular, yes, but I think that's definately not the only reason.

Bwuuuuh?! Wasn't AoS was already in planning stages (in a vague "let's give Coulson a tv show" sense with no defined plot other than obviously Coulson dealing with his resurrection) when the Avengers was written?? And the teaser things like "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" were promo for not only the movies but sort of beta testing a reception to the sort of things he might get into in a tv show. Right?

I'm just the messenger, I don't actually believe it!

Oh no, that reaction was very much directed at people who believe that, not at you. Well the "wasn't it true that a show was planned" part is directed to a sort of generalized "you" of people in the MCU fandom (which I'm very much on the periphery of).

Anyway, you're cool, and fandom can be stupid.

Yeah I was never sure if the whole 'fandom resurrected him' was actually legit, I thought it was something they'd had planned for him. And as you've said, Marvel and Whedon.

I mean they dropped a really obvious hint in the Avengers movie itself that he wasn't really dead, or that the death was staged, or something

which isn't entirely what ended up happening, but...I think it was an intentional lose end
