Misconceptions your fandoms have

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Though it'd be cool to see what kind of misconceptions/urban myths your guys' fandoms have that are just plain wrong.

Stuff like the Free! fandom still thinking the popularity of the TV commercial got the anime made.

Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Or Free tumblr fandom thinking they had anyhing to do with getting the show made. Lol, no.

All Television fandoms ever: guys, you DO realize that a huge percentage of writing decisions, character decisions, and plot twists are determined by network executives' pressure, not because the show's writers decided "hey, this would be a good idea!" and wrote the entire script out exactly the way they wanted to, right?

Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)

Or that one individual, like a producer, actually controls anything.

Actually, i think a lot of people ARE oblivious to that, or at least don't take it into consideration. I mean, the bigger the name the less I think it's a problem, and it also depends on the network, but network executives don't care about creativity or character development. I really never took that into account until my sister married a film geek and I started reading TV Tropes.

I'm still stuck on how fs doesn't know nearly as much about pandas as it thinks it does.

pandas
- have a diet so poor that embryo pandas aren't nourished in the womb for the longest time and so they get born as helpless gummy drops

- helpless naked gummy babies who proceed to scream at the slightest provocation and have to be carried in the mother's mouth when she climbs around the tree and doesn't leave them on the ground. but the panda mom has to eat because she's p much starving at this point

- male pandas don't care about their spawns and would probably eat them.
male pandas are forever alone guys as well who often can't get it up.

- female pandas have infrequent fertility periods and when they don't find a mate, get p often false pregnancies, which they spent needless energy on

- they once were omnivores and still have the digestive system of an omnivore, but they lost the ability to eat meat (missing enzymes?) and can't even digest most of the bamboo they eat

right?

What I hear a lot in the MCU is that Phil Coulson was brought back by fan willpower alone - but c'mon, it's Marvel. And Whedon.

It's not like it's the first resurrection ever.

The might have noticed the character was popular, yes, but I think that's definately not the only reason.

Bwuuuuh?! Wasn't AoS was already in planning stages (in a vague "let's give Coulson a tv show" sense with no defined plot other than obviously Coulson dealing with his resurrection) when the Avengers was written?? And the teaser things like "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" were promo for not only the movies but sort of beta testing a reception to the sort of things he might get into in a tv show. Right?

Yeah I was never sure if the whole 'fandom resurrected him' was actually legit, I thought it was something they'd had planned for him. And as you've said, Marvel and Whedon.

I mean they dropped a really obvious hint in the Avengers movie itself that he wasn't really dead, or that the death was staged, or something

which isn't entirely what ended up happening, but...I think it was an intentional lose end

The SVU fandom still thinking that Warren Leight (the head writer) is responsible for Chris Meloni's departure, even though Meloni walked before Leight was even brought in.

NCIS fans thinking that Ziva is accurately portrayed as an Israeli.

Umm. NO.

Israel's a real place, and Israelis have feelings, and their own culture, and canon!Ziva was so far off the mark that...

*takes deep breath*

I am calm (or a reasonable facsimile thereof).

I stopped watching in S5, and I went off and merrily did what any self-respecting fan would do: I wrote fix-it fic.

But it sill makes me so damn mad when I come across dumb-ass misinformed fans who use canon!Ziva as a reference for Israeli-anything.

Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
So ... there are no Israelis like Ziva? At all?

I can certainly accept that she's not representative of all, but you're claiming she's representative of none?

The SNK fandom has rather... spotty knowledge of how quickly people die from things like legs being torn off.

Also in general, the medical knowledge (or lack thereof) can be rather painful to read (sex with acid burns all over your body? wow, how... pleasant). Then again, a lot of fandoms make medical stuff up right and left...

Oh, and there was that one fic where they thought that detention is a thing you do in university, too.

Surprisingly there's not actually that many firearms misconceptions in my fandom, in spite of the source material. Prooooobably has a lot to do with so many of the fans being either active service(wo)men or gun nuts.

That the first season of Digimon was only supposed to be thirteen episodes long. The co-creator and series director of the first two seasons of Digimon (along with a few other staff interviews) refuted this rumor. Adventure was always supposed to be a year-long anime.

Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Makes sense. Adventure01 = 2001. Adventure02 = 2002. A surprising amount of fans didn't pick up on that though.

Vikings fandom thinking it's historically accurate. I mean, the showrunner insists that it's just "history" and not "historical fiction" so I know where the issue comes from, but come on. Be reasonable.

People thinking that Captain America has any significant level of superhuman strength. "Peak human" is the point of the character; it's what makes him an aspirational figure.

Also, people who think that Captain America is all about following orders haven't read this: http://www.itsadansworld.net/2010/12/moments-in-cool-amazing-spider-man-537.html
