How old would you consider old enough to start using labels?

Considering all men are rapist scum, that seems to be a good idea.

Shh, you're trying too hard again.

I remember having a tomboy phase when I was 13-17. I think part is that there's the social labeling of what a girl is and what a boy is. I'm cisgendered-I identify as the sex I was born as-but I've never been really "girly". It took me a while to realize just because I don't like pink or wearing dresses, it didn't mean I wasn't a woman.

While of course there's trans* individuals, I think there are also kids who just aren't aware that you don't need 100000000 labels to describe what you are.

I share this thought. I dislike it when people label themselves in ways that takes a Degree In Internet Subforums to figure out.

That depends on what you call labels, and it also depends on the person.

Which makes it hard, I know.

I think it's less about the age than about X number of time having felt that way. But, age does play a factor in the sense that hormones DO change things. I mean look at your classic thing where people go from "ew opposite gender has cooties" to "opposite gender is awesome let me kiss them all over" in a matter of just few years. I'd argue sexual orientation is a very hard thing to be sure of a pre-puberty or even at the beginning of it. (gender dysporia is different, as some people get that very young). It wasn't really uncommon in my friend group to still be unsure at the beginning of college, though.

It's not so much that I think people can't have a label if they're really sure. It's that I think a lot of kids now pick labels because they feel like they need to when they've barely entered a phase where sexuality is even on their radar.

Basically, I think the better attitude would be to have "piss off, ask me in 5 years time" as a more acceptable default, than to label every possibly variation in human attraction.

And that doesn't mean you can't actually go out and date people in the meantime.

I think people take them far too seriously. It's not a horrible thing if you change over time. It's not a horrible thing to call yourself gay in one context, bisexual in a different context, and queer in a third context. It's not a lifetime commitment.

Yeah, but the taking too seriously is sort of the core of the issue with the same people. I agree it's not (or shouldn't be) a lifetime commitment. But then I've seen sheer hate and accusations of people being "traitors" or "causing erasure" or even "being transphobic" for using a "wrong" label.

Yeah, let's just erase transgender people who identify as straight, gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
