Re: Movies/books/shows you're supposed to like but don't?

I know I've got a bunch of these, but the only one I can think of off the top of my head is 'The Dark Knight.' Everyone was like, "this movie is Jesus!" But watching it felt like swallowing small bits of metal.

OH WAIT. I thought of something else: 'The Name of the Wind.' Holy fuck, that book. So many people I know rec'd it, but it drove me bonkers. I was feeling it during the first few chapters, but then it flashed back to Kvothe's youth, and I spent the duration of the book waiting for the flashback to end so that we could get back to the interesting bits. I was about 3/4 of the way through when I realized that wasn't going to happen, because at that point, it couldn't. I was so pissed at all the time I'd wasted.

Oh my god Name Of The Wind. Thank god the hype for that has mostly faded at this point. So unenjoyable me. I think the worst part was that everything was somehow justified by the fact that Kvothe was an unreliable narrator. But having an unreliable narrator doesn't make something good, in and of itself, unless you do something with it.

Yesss! Yes yes yes. It's not just that, either: the whole "unreliable narrator" thing only really works when there are multiple narrators, so that the story isn't driven by a single flawed perspective. And in this case, the "interviewer" absolutely doesn't count, since he wasn't present for the bulk of the events in the book.

It's just...ugh. It's a whole lot of nothing, surrounded by bright, hot flashes of awful (the female characters. Jesus fuck, the female characters).

Agreed on Nolan's Batman, I couldn't finish it.
