That Snape changed sides because he was good person rather than because Lily was everything to him.
philstar22: (Neville)

This. So much this. Also that Snape is a good teacher. And that Lily was just as much at fault (more so according to some) for their friendship ending. And that he and Harry had a "rivalry" going where Harry was just as bad and where Hermione being smart somehow made her deserve being bullied by a teacher. And that Neville's biggest fear being Snape says something about Neville rather than that Snape was an awful bully to him.

Yes, I have lots of feelings on Snape.

I share your feelings. He was a vicious, bullying fuck who made the lives of children worse. Christ, Neville's parents were tortured into insanity and it's implied that his granny was borderline abusive, but his greatest fear? Sirius fucking Snape. When you've won THAT particular traumatize-a-kid match, it's not because you're sweet but misunderstood.

That is just perfection. That typo is glorious. Neville totally walked in on Sirius fucking Snape amd has been traumatized ever since.

AYRT

...dammit, I wish I could say that was intentional rather than a brainfart. :)

I have a lot of feelings on Snape too because he's my favorite character in HP, but I agree with everything you said.

Quite a big number of people, however, have twisted the character beyond recognition and where there was a bitter, ugly, vengeful, hateful, damaged man obsessed with dark magic is a ruggedly handsome, misunderstood, selfless prince.

... and this is once of the reasons I continued to avoid the HP fandom even after my kids were grown.

Same here.

I think it comes down to people feeling they can't like an unlikeable character so they need to make him likeable.

"I think it comes down to people feeling they can't like an unlikeable character so they need to make him likeable."

Yeah, this.

I live for problematic characters personally. I think a lot of the Snape bias has to also do with people identifying with some parts his background (an outsider; bullied) and then projecting their own qualities on him (managed to mature into adults who don't bully kids entrusted to their care) and softening his flaws (his obsession with dark magic does not equal an obsession with death metal or something like that).
