Tell us about widely-accepted fanon in your fandoms

Instead of people asking "is Thing X fanon or canon?" let's instead have people pre-emptively inform FS that Thing X is fanon, not canon.

A bitchy tone is okay for really annoying/frustrating examples of fanon that is mistaken for canon, but please feel free to also mention fanons that you really love too, and if you wish, feel free to explain why the fanon is good and makes sense.

Probably the most famous is Castiel X Dean. (Despite everyone on the show yelling to the rooftops, "NO!")

Steve is dumb and can't figure out technology.

Thor is dumb and yells all the time.

Tony is the only smart man in this group of idiots, and Steve constantly bullies/bullied him.

The whole Thor thing bugs me; Thor isn't my favorite character, but he hardly does that.

The others bug me, too, because while it would take Steve a while to get used to things, it doesn't make him dumb.

Frost giants with horns? In my MCU fic?

It's more common than you think.

This is an old one but one that was like...super pervasive (like I think in almost every fic).

In Dragonball Z there was Saiyan bonding. Like, when a Saiyan mated with their partner they could bite their neck and by telepathically connected. I have no idea where it came from, but it was EVERYWHERE.

Vulcans don't *necessarily* mind-meld with their partner during sex. Nor do they necessarily share a permanent telepathic link if they marry a human.

In Teen Wolf, Derek is silent and super serious. Stiles has verbal diarrhea constantly.

A fanon that I actually really like but which I find fascinating in its universal acceptance despite not being canon: in Starsky & Hutch, the idea that Starsky was in Vietnam. All he says was that he was in the army, and it's a one-line reference.

I find it fascinating because this is a very understandable assumption for first-wave fans who saw the show first-run in the '70s to make: if a American male character who is in his early-to-mid-30s, who has been a police officer since the late 1960s, said, in 1977, that he had been in the army, of course every viewer watching in 1977 would parse such a remark as "Vietnam" and write fanfic of it accordingly.

However, all the fans who got into the show much, much later, are most likely going along with that fanon because of the Fanfic Rule of Angst. Not that this is remotely irritating to me mind you, I just find it rather curious to see just how strong and unanimous a hold a single line has had over a character's fanon backstory.

So many for Teen Wolf, most of which are bad.

That Stiles has no brain-to-mouth filter and will say whatever he's thinking.

That Derek speaks in monosyllables, grunts or only using his eyebrows.

That Stiles is a Pack Mom who would want to take care of everyone. God no. If anyone's a pack mom, it's Scott.

That Scott is stupid. C'mon! He's not as smart/observant as Stiles but that doesn't make him stupid.

That Isaac is the pack puppy. This is related strongly to Packmom!Stiles because authors always have Stiles wanting to take care of Isaac.

That Peter had a wife and kids before the fire. Has kinda been Jossed by the show, but is still popular in fic.

We've never known exactly how long Scott and Stiles have been BFFs. It's fanon that it's been since kindergarten/early elementary. This one I really like and believe.

In SVU:

Alex Cabot grew up with Trevor Langan, and that "date" Elliot and Liv walked in on was just a catching-up dinner between old friends.

Abbie Carmichael is gay and sleeping with [Alex/Olivia/Casey/Serena Southerlyn/all of the above].

Alex and George Huang are bffs.

How about Teen Wolf, the Sheriff's first name being John?
It's so widely accepted that I get really weirded out if a fic gives him a different name.

Homura/Madoka.

Bubbline (at least, it WOULD be canon if it weren't for Cartoon Network telling the writers "no," so really, it counts as canon because the writers definitely want it to be [maybe this part would go better under the "misconceptions the fandom has" thread]).

Sasha Braus LOVES potatoes.

The Sentinel:
- Guides and Sentinels are tru wuv soul mates and/or are biologically impelled to have sex with each other.
- Jim can distinguish Blair's heartbeat/smell out of thousands of people from huge distances away. - - Blair is a weak, helpless uke.
- Jim is so dependent on Blair that being without him for any amount of time basically puts him in a catatonic state (not always caused by his senses).

In one episode, two pegasi with bat wings are briefly seen pulling Princess Luna's chariot. Fandom extrapolated an entire race of bat-winged ponies, either carnivorous or vampiric, with a fondness for nighttime and a cultural link to Princess Luna. (There's an alternate interpretation that their appearance is the result of magic on their armor, which would also explain why royal guards look so similar.) Ether Echoes did a pretty good compilation of the various ideas fans have built around them: http://www.fimfiction.net/blog/327866/bat-pony-naming-diet-habitat-and-origin

Yavanna is patron Valië of Hobbits.

This is extremely prevalent on the kink meme, and often played on with Bilbo/[Dwarf] romances. I am not against it myself, but I think there is just as good a case for Nessa and Vána as patrons, as hobbits are a bouncy people fond of dancing and Yavanna seems more of a patron of wild nature - trees and forests, while her sister Vána is more flowers, so probably more inclined to cultivated plants.

I don't people claim it canon, not like Aulë being patron of the Dwarves is canon, or Elves often naming Elbereth (Varda) as their favourite, but it's just so comment in fanfic.

That Spencer Reid has Asperger's. Nowhere is it even implied in canon dialogue, and there's no canon evidence to support it, either. And no, eidetic memory and a high IQ don't count.

Anna Milton's angelic name was not Anael.

I believe Julie McNiven has gone on record as saying she thinks it's a good candidate, but there's no actual canon evidence that it was so or even that she had a different name as an angel. The voices on Angel Radio referred to her as Anna, Cas always addressed her as Anna, and she herself never mentioned having another name. Also, several other female angels we've met since have had human-like names (Rachel, Naomi, Hannah,) as have some of the males, so 'Anna' is certainly not out of the ordinary in that respect.

There's nothing wrong with it as a headcanon, but I wish other roleplayers would do their homework and ask before assuming it's my Anna's angelic name!

Jotunn are all intersex and able to get pregnant even though they appear male. I shy away from every fic that has Jotunn!Loki in the tags because people seem to use it interchangeably with the intersex!Loki tag and don't even bother tagging for m-preg in those cases anymore. And I really had enough Loki-based surprise m-preg to last for a lifetime.
