Then again, I get annoyed when English speaking fandom says Shingeki no Kyojin. Why can't we just say Attack on Titan? I mean, I get there was fandom before official English names were out, but SnK seems like the more popular title and it boggles my mind.

Hmm, interesting point.
I think for me it's that because I originally was talking about the series in my native language (which isn't English), using the Japanese name is no more awkward than the English. Also, we have a tendency to just call it "shingeki". To this day I have only actually discussed the series aloud in Japanese, Korean, and Hebrew XD (okay, so in Korean is Jinkyeok e ko-in, but same difference), so saying "Attack on Titan" aloud just sounds weird to me.

For me at least, that's done a lot to reinforce SnK over AoT

Ah yes, the classic. Hopefully now that we have a canon last name for him it'll die down...

Meanwhile, even now there are still people in Death Note fandom calling the lead character "Raito' and coming up with stupid excuses for it. (I don't care if you don't think Soichiro Yagami seems like the kind of guy who would name his son "Light," canon fact is he did.)

I read one fanfic where they called Light "Raitou". Like, with an extra-u, to make it more... Japanese sounding? That's not even the correct katakana version of the name. And by the way, his name is still Light, so...

I guess Death Note had a lot of fans before official English translations came out. I remember when Ryuk was "Luke" for awhile, due to some fan translations. But seriously, Light is Light because it is blatant, in your face symbolism that is only slightly less blatant in Japanese. It's not a matter of opinion.

Stupid shit like that is not even a fan-only thing. The German dub of Howl's Moving Castle had Howl called Hauro (Ha-oo-ro, extra emphasis on the u sound) because it is ANIMAY AND THINGS HAVE TO SOUND JAPANESE you know. There are so many different levels of stupid to this, I can't even start.
