Re: Stuff you love, but can't really recommend to other people

Wolf's Rain:

It's my favorite show. However, it's anime, stars non-human characters, has a fairly slow start, is depressing, and is thematically very dense.

Also, with most series I recommend, I'll say something along the lines of "watch to so and so episode and if you don't like it, it's not for you." But with Wolf's Rain I really think the series has to be finished in order to appreciate it. Which makes it a hard sell.

The only time I recommended it is if the other person has heard of Yoko Kanno.

Really? I feel like Wolf's Rain is one of those very respectable anime. Like recommending some to read The Brothers Karamazov or something - they might not like it, but you sure are well-read (well-watched) and fabulous for recommending it. :P

How would it starring non-human characters be a negative exactly? Sure, they're wolves but they spend a good portion of their screentime as their human illusions. Plus, people go crazy over wolves.

It is also a pretty good anime. I could understand being hesitant to rec it to non-anime fans. But other anime fans, not so much.

Wolf's Rain is always one of the first shows I recommend to people who aren't normally into anime but who do like sci-fi/fantasy.

Yeah, that's one thing with Wolf's Rain, you really have to watch it from start to finish to process it, and it's overall just more than bit weird. But it's the kind of weird a certain subset of fans would love - the same people who can get on board with Witch Hunter Robin, Ergo Proxy, and the like, philosophical semi-magical scifi.

I think I'm hanging out with the wrong people. When I used to recommend this show to people, I didn't have much success. When I could get people to watch it, they usually stopped because of the things I listed above. So I stopped recommending it (except for the Kanno exception).

But you guys make me really happy! I'm glad some other people like it too. I'll have to check out the other anime that you guys mentioned!
