Stuff you love, but can't really recommend to other people

For whatever reason, be it bad, tasteless, weird, too good for this cruel world, or just not other people's type of thing.

Black Swan by Mercedes Lackey

I always want to rec it, because I legitimately adore Odile's part of the story, but then I remember "oh yeah, the hero raped someone".

...

Also, her Tales of the 500 Kingdoms books. They're just so fluffy, but seriously, The Sleeping Beauty is amazing.

i want to say fargo, but if you read my comments (even just in passing), you know that's not the case. still, i often feel like adding "it's not for everyone" when recommending it, but that's very vague anyway and not indicative of how fucking weird this show is.

i tend to tread lightly when it comes to comedy. humor is one of the most subjective things ever, and something that has me in stitches might leave someone else cold. still, there are comedies that are objectively good. for example, you can't go with wrong monty python or the naked gun (i know one person who doesn't like the naked gun. heretic.)

Mostly Bleak House. It's my favorite book and I love it to pieces, but I doubt most people want to read 1000 pages of Dickens surrounding a legal case.

I...actually enjoyed the Secret Circle series (the books, not that...thing the TV series was) It's sooooo bad. The main character is pretty much a Mary Sue who gets the specialist powers and everyone loves her, so there's no way I'd rec it.

I sometimes hesitate to rec Princess Tutu. Not because of the content, I think it's a really great anime, it just has a stupid name.

The 2006 movie The Covenant. It's been talked about lately because Sebastian Stan is in it, but it's definitely a guilty pleasure because it's not great. Had a pretty active fandom for about 6 years because of having several attractive young guys in the cast, but has since all but died.

Bob's Burgers. While it's not a horribly offensive show like, say, Family Guy or South Park... it certainly has its elements that some people either really love or really hate, I've found.

King of the Hill, too, for about the same reasons as Bob's Burgers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Nickelodeon iteration. While I find it to be an incredibly hilarious show with some well-written moments, genius voice casting, and decent amounts of action; the poor writing/handling of its female characters (mostly April) and Donatello in general (especially his creeper*crush on April) are things I know can be huge turn-offs to some people, so I'm reluctant to rec to people who are particular about female characters (which I totally get). Oh, and the body horror, too. Can't forget the body horror. (Plus, S2 so far has been hit by the sophomore slump hard, but if yesterday's episode was any indication, they might be headed for a quality rebound)

Okay, so out of the two anime series I actually own, one of them is fucking Speed Grapher.

Speed Grapher is essentially the result of Gonzo sitting the Anime industry down and saying, "Look, guys, this whole fetish thing is getting really out of hand, and we need to talk about it. Let's do a show where your fucked-up paraphilias literally give you themed superpowers." The first fucking scene is the main character being a war photographer, and popping a stiffy when he gets some third-world villager on camera being shot in the head. You get your superpowers by kissing a drugged, out-of-it 14-year-old who's being rented out by an underground sex club.

And yet. It is so good. It's an honest look at how modern day Japan is not really dealing with its sexual weirdness very well, but in a way that's not just DAMN YOU PEOPLE AND YOUR IMMORAL ACTS YOU ARE GOING TO HELL. (Also, show has zero problem with women and gay people that I ever noticed). It is also one of the very few properties dealing with paraphilias in a way that's not "lol dude likes the boobies" (when it's not giving you the power to turn into Emma Frost because you like diamonds too much of course.) The characters are likeable, the dub is fantastic, well-choreographed fight scenes, and the main character realizes that being attracted to the 14-year-old is NOT COOL DO NOT GO THERE (and they do not, in fact, actually go there).

But I can't rec it to anybody, because it's got fetish superpowers and the romantic lead is 14. Goddamn it.

A lot of the video games I like I wouldn't bother recommending to most people, honestly, unless I knew we shared similar tastes. When people ask me to rec games I go with the sure bets like Fallout 3 or Mass Effect or Borderlands or Uncharted, not niche games like megaten or anything requiring practice, patience, or skill, like the Souls games or Rainbow Six games. If they don't have these and don't want to put in some effort, they won't enjoy them, and I'm not really in the habit of recommending things people won't enjoy.

Mostly, yaoi stuff.

Viewfinder by Ayano Yamane really, really captured my imagination for some reason, but it's rapey, kinky yaoi and not a whole lot more than that.

Same with Ai no Kusabi. Freaking love it, the worldbuilding and everything, but it's shameless, rapey yaoi.

Add DRAMAtical Murder to that list. Even for other fans of slash, I could never recommend this stuff non-anon.

Most things I would be happy to recommend despite any issues with it, but...maybe Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II? Not that isn't a good game, and I'm fairly certain I've even rec'd it before, but...that game needs a caution because it just wasn't finished. And it's buggy (it took me quite a while to get past one of the first sections because the game kept crashing). It's a fucking mess but what's there is very worth playing, its just frustrating because it's decent but could be fantastic if the damn thing had been properly finished.

Wolf's Rain:

It's my favorite show. However, it's anime, stars non-human characters, has a fairly slow start, is depressing, and is thematically very dense.

Also, with most series I recommend, I'll say something along the lines of "watch to so and so episode and if you don't like it, it's not for you." But with Wolf's Rain I really think the series has to be finished in order to appreciate it. Which makes it a hard sell.

The only time I recommended it is if the other person has heard of Yoko Kanno.

I often have trouble reccing K Project to people because while I love it, the anime does not stand alone well and really needs the side materials to shine, and that kind of commitment is a lot to ask of someone (and to be perfectly fair, I do consider that a failing on the anime's part, viewers shouldn't have to seek out side materials to get the full understanding of a series). So it's basically like "You should watch this anime, it's kinda confusing at first and ultimately mostly just okay but if you check out the several manga series, novels, short stories and audio dramas then it gets really good."

Arrow.

"Oh man, I can't wait for the next season of Arrow!"

"I've been thinking of checking that out, is it good?"

"Um. I wouldn't say 'good' exactly..."

Haru Wo Daite Ita (Embracing Love is the American title). It's BL but it features one of the most loving, developed relationships I've ever seen in any medium. It's really dramatic and there's tons of shouting and tears, but it feels really heartfelt. It's also character driven. But I can't rec it or people will be all, "Yaoi?? Sucks." I don't want to hear that crap.

One thing, really.

Schadenfreude, a novel by TheNineteen. Dark, rapey, horrific medical experimentation and trauma bonding ... and as far as I'm concerned, it belongs right between A Clockwork Orange and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest. It's that good. But, well, you know. Most people just don't have the stomach for it.

Wolf Guy. Single best werewolf comic I have ever read, incredible art, fascinating story, vicious and amazing altogether, but. Fifteen chapters - one and a half volumes - of graphic, oversexualized gang rape. The fact that I was even determined to stomach that just to finish the story suggests how good it is, but to this day I'm not sure if it was worth it; I'm still very conflicted. I can't rec it in good conscience, or at least not without a detailed warning.

I can't get anyone to watch Farscape!

And I really can't get anyone to watch Rise of Cobra and gush about the Lewis siblings with me.
