Re: Movies/books/shows you're supposed to like but don't?

Legally Blonde. I can't get behind hailing it as a feminist subversion of the dumb blonde stereotype. When I saw it (before tumblr, before I was much into internet discourse at all) I thought it was just one giant blonde joke played straight. "Look at this cute blonde getting a law degree and being good at it... by knowing about hair care and stuff!" is the joke. Because that would totally never really happen, right? (Though none of that actually upset me as much as that one part with the tricking a gay man into outing himself and bisexual erasure that came with it.)

Well, wasn't the guy also aiding in a false murder accusation? But yeah, now that you mention it that was wrong. And it was a bit weird that she reasoned he had to be gay because of his shoes. Wouldn't someone like her know better than that, actually?

I think that movie is a bit tricky - It does seem like the dumb blonde joke played straight, but in the end, it was a bit of a subversion of all the "pretty girl is also smart and wins over all" trope: She was just as good at all things law school related as the rest but in the end, she won because she ALSO had an additional skillset unrelated to her law degree and it was the thing people mocked her about. So, rather than "she only won because she knew about girly stuff", it was "stop discounting skills you think are useless because it will bite you in the ass". It wasn't perfectly done, but still.
