My mother had it two years ago, and the biggest thing she noticed (aside from the obvious improved vision) was increased sensitivity to light and more noticeable light haloing while driving at night. The process is ever improving, though, so I'm not sure if the side effects are still that bad.

I don't think the cost depends on how bad your eyes are, though, so much as what's actually wrong with them. A lot of different things can cause nearsightedness, so you should really ask an eye specialist about this.
