Laser Eye Surgery

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone had it?

My eyes are not extremely bad - I can easily function, and usually do, without glasses or contacts. But things farther away are definitely fuzzier, and I have trouble reading signs and so on if they are at a distance. It's bad enough to be annoying, and where I really should wear glasses while I drive and such (though I'm not currently legally required to) but I do squint a lot. I hate wearing glasses, and contacts hurt my eyes, and I just want good vision. A new job basically requires me to read things far away, so I have to wear glasses or contacts, and when I went to update my prescription (it hasn't changed in years) and get new glasses/contacts, the price was over $200.

So I've been considering laser eye surgery. With glasses/contacts/appointments already so expensive, I wonder if it wouldn't eventually pay for itself, and then I wouldn't have to worry about it at all. The more I think about it, the more I'm interested.

Has anyone done it? What are your experiences? how much did it cost? I know prices range hugely, but I'm hoping I will be a little cheaper because my eyes aren't extremely bad or anything.

My mother had it two years ago, and the biggest thing she noticed (aside from the obvious improved vision) was increased sensitivity to light and more noticeable light haloing while driving at night. The process is ever improving, though, so I'm not sure if the side effects are still that bad.

I don't think the cost depends on how bad your eyes are, though, so much as what's actually wrong with them. A lot of different things can cause nearsightedness, so you should really ask an eye specialist about this.

I haven't had it done because the few people I know who have ended up with problems like poor night vision (and mine is bad enough already) or odd visual disturbances.

But I can live with contacts; your trade-off might be different.

My opinion on this issue sort of depends on why you hate wearing glasses. Like all surgeries, lasik has risks, and it also won't fix keep your vision permanently perfect. You can only get it done once (currently), but your eyes will still degrade as you age, so you'll most likely end up in glasses eventually. Not everyone is a good candidate, and if you hate glasses for cosmetic reasons, I'd highly advise against surgery.

This site covers the basics, though, since you're curious.

That's actually not true. You can absolutely get it more than once, and continue to have revisions once you've had it, though you may have to have a different kind (PRK) that has a longer recovery time because your corneas will be thinner. It's all right there on the site you just linked.

My mom had it. I don't know anything about how much it cost, but it didn't stick. Her corrected vision faded rapidly and it's now worse than it was before. Just throwing that out there for consideration.

I've had a couple of family members who have had it and they love it and don't regret a thing. The price really just depends on where you live, who you get to do it, and your existing eye condition (but, really, if there's one thing you don't want to go bargain hunting for, it's a laser eye surgeon so I wouldn't necessarily pick the cheapest unless they come very recommended). I can't remember what my mom paid but she decided to go with a monthly plan and paid it off fairly quickly although she was by no means wealthy so i don't think it was too much

Both of my parents had it done, with extremely different results. Here's one thing to take into account: your pupil size. My dad's pupils are tiny. His vision was pretty bad, but he walked out of there and had perfect vision and still does, only using reading glasses. I think that was maybe 10 years ago. My mom, on the other hand, was part of the experimental group, because her vision was so terrible that she was desperate. She has large pupils. It regressed immediately, she had a second corrective surgery, still wears glasses, and her night vision is shot. Obviously she's what you'd call a horror story and very much an exception to most people's experience. And within my own family we have a strikingly different example in my dad. I would get some consultations from places with very high reputations to get answers for your eyes specifically. My dad's sight was much worse than yours and it worked perfectly for him. But pupil size is a factor. Other things too, but I'm not as familiar with the rest. Basically, sorry for the tl;dr and don't hesitate to get multiple professional opinions if you're considering it.

Just make sure to do it in a place where they do this surgery a lot, like one doctor makes a dozen of surgeries a day and it specialized on it.

Glasses are cheaper.

I'm considering laser-eye surgery, too, but until then, I use Zenni Optical to get my glasses. They can cover even really strong prescriptions for far cheaper than most places I've been.

It does depend on your prescription, too. I'm massively nearsighted (enough that I now have 4 pairs of glasses, each for focusing at a different distance) and both my ophthalmologists have said that Lasik wouldn't do me any good as my eyeball is so "long."

But it certainly doesn't hurt to have a consult.

(Also -- there are a ton of different contacts: have you tried more than one type? The soft "disposable" ones are far more comfortable than any of the hard/gas permeable ones, imo. Also, the type of solution you use can have a really big impact on eye comfort: personally I found the hydrogen peroxide solutions like ClearCare to be much kinder on my eyes than the other formulations (as long as you do soak them the recommended length of time.)

Good luck!

I had it done two years ago now, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.

My vision pre-surgery was terrible; -6.75, -6.50, to the point where I was functionally helpless without my contact lenses in, and I was getting really tired of wearing them/caring for them. I hated glasses, too. I'd been considering the surgery for some time beforehand but I need to wait for my vision to stablize (it finally had for a few years prior to the surgery).

It cost about $3500, but I had the cadillac package so to speak, done by the clinic's best surgeon (who does the eye surgeries for the professional hockey players in the area) plus free lifetime revisions as needed for bladeless LASIK, but you could get the one-time-only bladed version by the clinic's residents for as little as $1200.

The surgery itself was over in seconds, and though it definitely did hurt, I had it planned out so I just went to bed right afterwards and slept (they give you plastic goggles to protect your eyes while you sleep) for about 12 hours afterwards, so they healed really well. Afterwards my vision healed to about 25/20 within a month, which I was okay with because hey - no glasses! There was also some very noticeable haloing effects around lights at night.

After about six-eight months, my vision was 20/20 and the haloing was almost gone. At my most recent checkup this April my right eye was 10/20 and my left was 20/20, and the haloing is completely gone. It's wonderful. My night vision is shit, but it was never very good to begin with, so I don't know how much to blame on the surgery.

My surgeon said that I was in the perfect age group (late 20-early 30s) where just about everyone's eyes have stopped changing, but there's still decades before age-related decline starts to take effect. According to him I'll probably have 20/20 vision well into my 40s, and I have enough tissue left for revisions when age-related decline does start to happen. So that's something to keep in mind if you're older/younger.

tl;dr A++++ would recommend

Ugh, I could have written this. I only have problems with one eye, the other is almost perfectly fine and I don't even need glasses until my eyes are strained. But I hate wearing glasses and I was thinking about getting the one eye done. But considering I don't even regularly need glasses in my daily life, I am really a bit too scared to let anyone do anything to my eyes unless it's absolutely necessary...
