ComPLETEly off topic but a friend of mine were co-writing fic some thirteen years ago and named a daughter after Callista. Daughter of a canon character an OC. Absolutely kickass woman.

So she has at least two fans, even if one's tangential (my friend did read the books, at least!)

She was no more boring than Luke, really.

I just had problem with the idea of her from the beginning. I mean, the books totally brushed off the fact that she took someone else's body and acted like it was no big deal. I didn't hate her per say, but I didn't think she was a good match for Luke and I wish the books had explored the implications of what she did more thoroughly.

TIL that enough people besides me have read these books that there is a fandom opinion about Callista. I actually really kinda liked her tbh. I thought her story was fascinating with the implications it laid down about the metaphysical things that were possible in the SWverse.

I think it suffers by association with Planet of Twilight and The Crystal Star, which are really quite bad, so any flaws in it get magnified.

Oh man, it's so bad, but I love Crystal Star for all the Luke angst and Han worry. I don't ship it, but I love the dynamic that book gave us.

da

I love the Crystal Star for the same reason...and wasn't it the one with all the kidnapped force-sensitive kids? I first read it when I was like 10 so I was all over that. "YES badass jedi kids show them adults who's boss!!1"

That's the one!

Yup. That's the one.

I love the first two thirds of the Crystal Star. Those Solo kids are so darn smart, lol. Then I got bored and there was some gigantic flower eating people or something idk it got so awful.

I read Children of the Jedi, but don't remember a whole lot of it. But OP, you really need meet my sisters because this one was their favorite.

I liked Callista much more than Mara, personally. She's no more a mary sue than Mara, imo.

I don't get the hate either. It was an interesting character to explore, and Luke certainly needed a broader experience of women simply to avoid his kissing history being his sister and mara.

I kind of liked the angle of Luke being the less experienced one of the Luke/Mara pairing personally. But yes, still, having kissed another girl or two was a good thing. I had problems with the Callista storyline and didn't think she was a good match for Luke personality wise, but at the time I was glad he was having some sort of romantic life.

I have memories of a book that was essentially Luke leading an AU life on a space ship. Did that really happen, and was this it?

I liked Callista - granted, I was also young, but I agree with your reasons. Luke needed positive female interaction and she was an interesting chracters.

I do get why they paired him up with Mara, nd love her, but there's no need to erase people's previous experiences. I always find this weird irl as well. Like none of your exes are supposed to exist.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was just a little older than that when I read it. I thought Callista was cool and was surprised to hear later that people hated her and were so happy she and Luke weren't endgame and he ended up with Mara. Nothing against her, but I knew nothing of the rest of the EU, other than flipping through the trilogy that introduced Mara.

It's the fabulous Drew Struzan, who did the iconic Indiana Jones posters and old-school style prequel ones. And a lot of Star Wars EU books. I doubt anyone remembers the '90s children's series called Jedi Prince, and while even kid!me knew they weren't very well-written, they had beautiful and extremely memorable covers by Struzan.

I can't even remember much about them except there was a three-eyed guy who claimed to be Palpatine's son and some nasty Moffs to back him up, a (good?) Hutt with hair (because of the covers and interior illos), and they tried to turn Leia to the Dark Side. 'S all I can dredge up.

Huh. It's fabulous. Amazing covers on questionable books would always draw me in, hehe.

And pardon my late-night slip of the finger, i meant *Amsel*. The style is just so alike.

I liked Callista too. My first screen name was Callista and I remember being really surprised that more people didn't like her.

I liked Mara Jade too but I never wanted Mara to be involved with Luke. It just seemed like their lives were too different. Callista I thought more suited Luke.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
OMFG SW NOVELS SECRET I LOVE YOU OP.

er anyway. I read this one when I was about 15, 16, and I really disliked it. It's one of the few I never bought because I disliked it so much. I hated Callista - is she really unpopular? I had no idea - probably cos I never think of her. >> Anyway, this is rambly, but I don't remember why I hated Callista so much. Maybe it was the fact that she was in Cray's body, and reading about her trying to access the Force was tedious, and .... yeah, I found her unconvincing and blah.

Oh and everyone was always going on about her legs. "The blonde with the legs" got really old, really fast.

I never shipped Mara/Luke though. I love Mara up until she married Luke. Then I was just like wtf are you doing??
