I wish people wouldn't take this out of context. There are times to listen to people who are offended and times to not listen. He's right that being offended is not the same as being right and you need to judge on a case by case basis. But then people took that and started using this as a universal argument for always ignoring people who are offended.

Precisely.

You've said it better than I think I could.

Well said.

That sounds a lot more reasonable than the quote taken out of context is.

Thank you for explaining the context of this. That makes so much more sense. I'm not Fry's biggest fan by any means, but I definitely thought he was a lot better than what this secret/macro implies out of context so was a bit confused.

If I'm remembering right, he was talking about the sort of Christians who get offended by "the War on Christmas" and stuff like that. I should ask my girlfriend. She likes Fry a lot more than I do.

I was about to post a similar thing, but you said it better.

Agreed, and well said.

I...would agree more if he hadn't said some, frankly, questionable things in the past and then blasted people for actually calling those things out [and I don't mean the bit about [certain] Christians and the War on Christmas crap].

He strikes me as one of those people who is very good at speaking out about problems that affect him but has trouble seeing things that don't affect him. He's said some good things about homophobia and I suspect he would disagree if someone tried to use this quote of his to tell him that he shouldn't be offended by something on that count. But he has definitely said some things that bothered me on other issues.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I do agree with you there. The part that actually gets me is that I think, at one point [iirc], he used his bi-polar as an excuse for something that was less than cool? Anyways, that's actually what bothers me since I also have it and people using it as an excuse bothers the hell out of me.

So it's not really a logical reason XD;;

I think the problem is is that people treat him like he's some kind of massive intellect and academic genius when he's actually a comedy writer. Smart, yes, but not an expert on everything under the sun. Plus anyone who is publically anti-religion seems to get a free pass when they say daft things. (cf Dawkins, Ricky Gervais, lots of other people.)
