See, I disagree.
I think, as the statment is saying, being offended by something is used by everyone as a cheap lazy way to get people to shut up.
"I'm offened by that" is said, but "so stop it or you're a bad person" hangs about unsaid.
It's a cheapshit statement people to bully dissenters into shutting up with the implied threat that they are bad inhuman people if they don't. It does no good to anyone.

FOR EXAMPLE: Steven Fry talking to that Russian politician, He did not try to bully the polititian into changing his view by telling him his homophobic attitude was "Offensive". He actually engaged the polititian. He questioned him, he gave arguments and counter arguments, he did not expect the polititian to just roll over because someone found him offensive. he actually challeneged him in an intelligent way. Because the alternative would be Stephen fry saying "I'm offended by your homophobia" and the polititian saying "Who cares? I'm offended by your homosexuality"
