Naruto-Hot Potato (spoilers)

On this week's Naruto: Sasuke is a dick

No, but seriously, this chapter felt really short. Kaguya turns the ground into lava and shoots the team up into the air. As they're falling Sasuke looks over at Kakashi/Sakura, and then summons his hawk and saves Naruto. Naruto complains about Kakashi and Sakura, to which Sasuke says Kakashi saved himself and Sakura by tying a scroll around a kunai. He also saved Obito by literally nailing him to a wall with another kunai like a post-it note.

Now, here is where the fandom is strongly divided about. Sasuke tells Naruto** that he only saved Sakura and Kakashi because they were near him, and that the only lives that matter and his and Naruto's-Since they're both needed to seal Kaguya away. Sakura becomes upset yet again, and Naruto agrees with Sasuke. He then goes on to mention the bridge arc, and repeats the words Sasuke had said after he saved him from Haku. (My body just moved on its own) He then tells him that Sasuke knows what he's talking about.

The scroll snaps, Naruto becomes Peter Pan and learns how to fly. He floats, Kaguya screams about not wanting to share her toys chakra, she starts doing a thing. End chapter

**There are two ways people are taking this scene, a lot of which depends on what they ship. The majority of the NaruSaku shippers think that it was just another chapter to show Sasuke doesn't care, pretty black and white. The other side of the fandom/Mostly SasuSaku shippers reads this scene as Sasuke is blatantly lying and Naruto calls him out for it. That's how I personally see it as well, since Sasuke has always been a little dick about how he feels/how he words things. It doesn't help that after the flashback Sasuke has that ol' manga cliche of 'hidden eyes "..."' And doesn't deny it. He also looked to Sakura/Kakashi first before saving Naruto. I wouldn't be surprised if this was leading up to some grand Team 7 asspull scene, since Kishi loves Sasuke so much.

At this point, it kind of bugs me how much Sasuke seems to need Naruto to think like him, instead of just doing his own thing as usual. Sasuke hasn't demonstrated a particular need to explain himself in any other circumstances, so that he's going out of his way now strikes me as telling, and not just of the exceptional opinion he has of Naruto. It reminds me a lot of how Nagato and Obito were so intent on breaking Naruto to their perspective, because deep down they didn't want to believe their own bullshit, and tried to push Naruto to either validate them or prove them wrong.

Hmm. I took it to mean Sasuke felt like Naruto was being too impulsive. (Here and when he almost ran out of Susanoo) They really do need to stay alive. Sasuke is just an extremely selfish character who only focuses on his own goals.

Who knows at this point though. The manga has become really strange now.

It's precisely because he's so self-centered and focused on his goals that it strikes me as weird that he's trying to convince Naruto of anything. Usually Sasuke would be "Focus, idiot", and that would be that, but this is the second speech he's tossed out and it's way more effort than he usually expends when He Knows He's Right.

I think Kishi just wanted to force a, "See! He does care!" scene. It does sound very expositiony-mouth-piece-y. Like a few chapters ago when he had Kakashi explain team 7's characters for the audience for some reason. I agree it does feel really out of place.

Yeah, it's probably just that simple instead of complex, but I really want to believe the story hasn't lost as much depth as it clearly has. Allow me my fantasies. ;__;
