In horror movies, if the camera is set up for a clear shot with both the foreground and background in focus and if it's following the character as she/he walks back and forth across the room doing whatever, I always focus on the background. Because sooner or later as the character crosses the room for the umpteenth time there will be a thing in the background that wasn't there a second ago. Be it a monster, a ghost, a psycho killer. There will be someone thing there.

It's such a cliche that I never flinch whenever the thing does appear.
