I don't have any triggers (as far as I know) but sometimes I definitely read things I know will upset me a good deal; maybe it is some form of emotional release or self-therapy. I could see that in your case as well.

I actually don't know if I have triggers, because I always found the description to be so...vague. I do have strong psychological responses to certain scenarios - some of them I actively avoid, some of them I might seek out anyway. But your description sounds about right - it's definitely some sort of emotional release.

We had a thread one day about watching things specifically because we knew it would cause us to cry. If I remember correctly plenty of people replied to it, so it must be pretty common. Sometimes you just need to get it out. (Or deal with your own feelings towards a certain subject even if there aren't tears.)

Me too. For some reason, I'm totally obsessed with the Partner Rape and Partner Betrayal fanfic tropes -- and the closer and more loyal and more awesome and the more I love the partnership in question, the more I crave it, precisely because it hurts me so so so much to read it. I don't know why I like that feeling of hurt, but it must have something to do with catharsis, or taming any "yes, they love each other, but what if...?" whispers by making them into a real story that's present in my memory.

I feel like most people in fandom have read something they feel is taboo. (And enjoyed it.) Often something they themselves don't even feel completely comfortable reading, but still manage to get something out of. It's fiction, so it's safe and an interesting way to explore things that you would never want to happen or even think about in real life contexts.
