She didn't even hate what was expected of her, she hated that she didn't fit it. That's why Mulan is one of my favorite "girl power" stories, because she's not Plucky Girl Trying To Make A Point, she's Frustrated Girl Trying To Do Right By Her Family and the "challenging people's notions of gender roles" thing is just a side effect of her finding an unexpected way to do that.
