The original purpose was for blind people, not unreadable secrets.

Blind people, people on small screens, and people for whom the images wouldn't load. And even when the secret was easy to read, the amount of extra information (and sometimes commentary) about the fandom(s) they brought in was frequently super-helpful and/or funny.

Though I was more annoyed with how they'd decide to stick trigger labels on secrets that didn't have them - particularly since they seemed to do it to things that didn't really need them on a regular basis.
