AYRT

I'm not a woman. And honestly, if that's how sad your defenses have gotten, maybe you need to just concede that you don't know anything about what you're talking about. Just walk away, find something you understand, talk about that. You'll be happier and won't embarrass yourself as much.

I have no horse in this race and I'm not the anon that claimed prostitution=rape, I'm just saying people itt seem quite eager to paint prostitution as though it's not a difficult experience for a lot of people. Of course there are variables to any situation and there are those in prostitution who even enjoy their work, but how often I hear of sex workers being abused or killed (as an anon pointed out, in British Columbia, Robert Pickton killed an estimated 60 prostitutes on his own in the span of the late 90's to mid 2000's) kind of slants things a bit. To say prostitution is an evil, wicked thing that automatically equates to rape is myopic and untrue, but to go to the opposite direction and say "oh most women in prostitution actually like it and aren't involved in it due to any outside pressure to find a source of income oh and also it's a safe reputable job" is also absurd. Especially since a lot of sex workers were forced into that life when they were children.

Fair enough; I appreciate that you're not one of the total nutjobs in this thread. However, a lot of the problems you describe feed on the very attitudes you're evincing: if sex workers were seen as people doing a job for money, people with the same legal status and protections as anyone else, would they be in danger as much?

Oh no, I'm all in favor of legalizing prostitution and making it a safe, legitimate occupation. The idea that prostitutes are subhuman or considered of less value absolutely baffles and disgusts me. However, whenever someone tries to make this happen in my country, both sides make extremely conflicting points. Most notably that legalizing it would make it easier for sick fucks to force children into sex trafficking, or something to that effect. I'm not sure if there's clout to that idea, but I do know our current approach with prostitution simply isn't working and is resulting in a lot of people getting hurt.
