I think the disagreement over that is a book-vs-show thing - in the book GRRM talks a lot about how the size, proportions and formation of his body (hip and other joint problems, I seem to remember) affects his gait (the word "waddle" is used a lot), making it painful and awkward for him to do stuff other people do easily. It's also aggravated by the fact that everything in Westeros is built for people of average height, so he has trouble going up and down stairs etc. It's one of those things that isn't brought out in the show because in the books it's something that comes up in the narration rather than dialogue.

Hmm. Okay, I see what you're saying. I only read the first book, and that was about four years ago, so I hadn't remembered all of that (apart from things being a bit more difficult for him due to his height, and people not treating him particularly well. His explanation to Jon Snow about why he reads has stuck with me).
