Only slightly related, but when I was college-age and out with my mom, I smiled and thanked a man for holding the door open for us at a store exit, and my mom told me, "You shouldn't be so smiley or guys will think you're hitting on them." :/

I can...kinda see the point of this? I plays into a lot of other unhealthy mentalities, but at the same time, I do know guys who seem to interpret any niceness from a girl as an invitation to flirt or as flirtatious. I know I've been 'accused' of flirting many times in my life when I was just being nice to a stranger or playful with my friends. :(

Yeah...I don't know, it's true a lot of the time. My reaction being inappropriately hit on used to be to smile and giggle with (what I thought) was obvious discomfort...I wanted the guy to pick up on the social cues that I was uncomfortable without me actually needing to say it (and therefore offend him, which I felt subconsciously was unsafe), but honestly, most guys just took it as encouragement.

Or if you smile to someone on the tube or bus, he thinks it's an invitation, even when you start totally ignoring them. It's like they think they have a foot in the door.

So while I don't know if I would say it as your mother did, she's got a fair point.
