I just watched this movie the other day. It was only ok.

I never read the books, but Stormy seemed like she could have been a really amazing character, and her being Egyptian would have been an interesting addition to that. I liked the one in the movie well enough but found her kinda bland and like she was there just to set up what happens at the end.

Plus I kept thinking she was the actress who played Allison on Teen Wolf so that pulled me out of the movie a lot.

Well, in the books she was of Mediterranean descent (I think?) but she was American, so I don't think it would have changed much? I haven't seen the movie though, so it's hard to tell.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No! Being a descendent of somebody that isn't lily-white means your born imprinted with *~vast culture-ality~* that supersede everything else!

They don't even specify her descent. Odd describes her as looking Egyptian, but the only details given are black hair & eyes.

There you go, then.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt. Oh. The way OP phrased it I thought she might have actually been Egyptian in the book. The movie's on Netfliks if you have that and want to see it. Like I said, it's ok. The ideas are great but in some of the execution it's comical rather than tense or scary like it was obviously trying for.

So weird I just finished that book today.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't look white to me. Not really Egyptian either. If she is white, she's probably Mediterranean at least, because her skin is quite dark.

I just saw this a few weeks ago! I haven't read the books, so maybe her racial heritage plays a big role in her character there, but I liked what we got here.

[personal profile] inkdust 2014-06-13 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, no racial heritage. It's just Odd romanticizing her.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the books in ages so more recent readers are free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall her race/heritage being at all made a big deal of (or honestly even mentioned) overtly.

The books are written from Odd's POV and from what I remember he merely describes her as dark-haired/eyed and looking Egyptian. It's never confirmed (though neither is it denied) that she is. And I dunno, but with a given name of 'Bronwyn' I would lean more towards her being Welsh than Egyptian, but people have been known to name their kids after names they admire from other cultures, so it's not entirely impossible.

Off topic from that, I actually really liked the movie. I reread the first book after watching it, and I was surprised at how... unspectacular I found the first book compared to how I remembered it. It was still good, it just wasn't ~*~amazing~*~ like I remember it being.

Maybe because I've had a big loathing for first person POV's for a long while now and it's been... well, however long it's been since the first book came out that I've read it.

Haven't read the books, but nitpick, if they named her Bronwyn it's gotta be a mistake, because that's the male spelling. Bronwen is the female version. Welsh names have the -wyn ending for male and -wen ending for female.

/has interest in linguistics and is something of a pedant about it

Haha, you made me go grab my book to look because I was typing it without thinking and you're correct, they do have it as Bronwen! :]

(That was me above, I just forgot to log in before hitting submit. XD)

Based on the photos I've seen of modern Egyptians, and I've seen quite a few, she...doesn't look like she'd be at all out of place on an Egyptian street? Middle Eastern folks come in a whole wide spectrum of skin tones, and while yes I know Egypt is technically an African country, the culture and population demographics are still more in line with places like Iran than with, say, Kenya.

Don't you know? You must be this dark [present arbitrarily picked shade] to be a POC. Anybody lighter is Whitey McWhiterson and if they claim to be anything else, they're appropriating.

This is truthy fact, because I said so!

Are you quite done with your "OMG WOC are all GODDESSES all those pasty white mayo bitches are trash lololol" silliness?

(Seriously, the way this secret is phrased, typo and all, sounds a lot like a troll.)

I still haven't seen this movie. I loved the first book and when I saw who was cast in the movie I was a little disappointed. Not because of race, though. I don't even remember how Odd described her in the book.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the book, so I can't say whether or not she was whitewashed, but at the very least she was terrible in the role. I think I'd have enjoyed it more without her glaring bad acting.

"Witty Egyptian goddess"

I must have read a different book than you.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't look white to me though?

I've known plenty of Egyptians, and the skin tone is about right.
