Geek Hierachy

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I stumbled across this today: http://brunching.com/images/geekchartbig.gif

And seeing as it's from 2002, I was wondering what you guys would change.

Still thinking about what I think about it, but when they say X-Men spinoffs, are we talking actual Marvel official X-Men spinoffs, or comics that are basically X-Men ripoffs?

Re: Geek Hierachy

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Actual X-Men related titles, probably. Since the 90s comics boom there have been a billion. It's probably a reference to said boom since anything related to it is looked down upon these days.

Dang, wasn't expecting Pokémon fans to be that low.

Not sure if you did the same thing, but I think they are referring to the cartoon with Ash, not the actual games. At least that's what I thought at first.

I'd say put bronies below furries.

Heinlien and Piers Anthony fans have dropped right down to Ocelot Kirk fans by now I think. But even they rank above MRAs and peple who bitch about My Little Pony fans (and I'm not just saying that because I have a pony icon (I've only watched 3 episodes maximum), I just like the character's expression).

What's the deal with Heinlien and Piers Anthony fans? I know nothing about them.

I hate how those people are trying to turn Heinlein into a shorthand for their agenda aka being a sexist racist asshole. He was a prolific author, across several decades, and I consider myself a fan despite his later works.

I admit I have never seen a Piers Anthony fan in the wild.

It depends, practically everyone in SF reads and references at least some Heinlein. Certain people pull Zombie Heinlein out of time and complain that Zombie Heinlein couldn't win anything because Starship Troopers. Other people note that few people other than King worked the market better than Heinlein, so Posthuman Immortal Heinlein would probably be more progressive than Zombie Heinlein.

And people still read Anthony?

I wouldn't consider Furries geeks. They are more fetishists.

I've always thought this chart needs a place for 'People who read fanfiction' rather than just writers. And you could put 'people who write shippy erotic fanfiction and also write to the creators of their favourite piece of media asking them to make their OTP canon' somewhere below 'erotic fanfiction writers'.

Seconding that Bronies need to be added on about the same level as Furries.

oh yeah, there needs to be a whole branch for ship-related stuff. Tinhatters. Shipping as activism. "It'll be canon in the season finale". I'd leave the hierarchy up to someone else, though :)

I always wonder where JPop fans would land, because a lot of anime fans look down on Jpop fans and a lot of Jpop fans look down on anime fans.

I don't care one way or the other. All of this is arbitrary.

I know KPOP fans are thought as less of than a lot of other fandoms (mostly young, kind of unestablished fanbase, a lot of lack of self awareness), so I see JPOP fans as more established, more mature to KPOP fans.

I dunno how Trekkies who get married in Klingon garb are so low on the list. They've found someone who wants to have sex with them for the long foreseeable future because of their geekery, not despite it - that's more than a lot of us geeks'll ever get.

Re: Geek Hierachy

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
personally, i'd put tinhat J2 shippers somewhere near furries

Re: Geek Hierachy

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
it's missing "people who make creepy photomanips of actors"

and "fans who ask their favourite actors creepy shipping questions"

Re: Geek Hierachy

It doesn't seem to be a geek hierarchy, more 'geeks I look down on more and more' chart. I mean, that's okay, but I'd love to see a chart that kind of estimates how deep into this shit are you.

Basically, there's one standard level of geek, and then it gets progressively deeper in. Do you read fanfic? Do you write fanfic? Do you have a tumblr devoted to them? Do you post on forums? Do you make graphics about it? And so on. Deeper and deeper levels of how much time you spend on your life.

Whereas furries are just...a geek with a particular fetish that actually gets deeper as you go.

Needs a category for people who make geek hierarchies.

And maybe a line for:

Uses Windows 8 -> Uses a Windows version other than 8 -> Uses Ubuntu -> Uses Arch -> Uses Linux from Scratch

For one thing, I would not change the placement of published science fiction/fantasy authors. I don't mean the significant professionals as a group (although there are definitely some who act this way) but the whole "I just published my first novel and that makes me hot shit and my opinion is worth more than yours" is alive and well at the cons I've been to.

I'm a Brony gamer who is also a casual Trek fan and writes erotic fan fic but it's not about ponies or Trek, it's about House.
