How To Train Your Dragon 2 [SPOILERS]
(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)Re: How To Train Your Dragon 2 [SPOILERS]
Re: How To Train Your Dragon 2 [SPOILERS]
And I don't know what it was about the movie or if it was just how I felt when I was watching it, but I really bored throughout it. Like on one level my eyes were one the screen and I was processing what the movie was about and on the other I just really didn't care what was happening to the characters at all.
Hiccup's mom face looked really weird, kind of like a broken doll. When Stoic died, it bugged me how everyone's tears fell from the middle of the eye. I also didn't feel like Stoic's death really added much to the film. Toothless's power-up (back spikes and blue neon glow thing at the end) felt kinda of power-up shounen-y to me. There was more romance in this movie than the last one. While I liked most Astrid and Hiccup's interactions, I got tired of all the romance gags centering Toughnut (I think that was her name) pretty quickly. I didn't really buy Hiccup's relationship with his mom. Apparently, Stoic's right hand man dude was canon gay, but I couldn't really tell until someone pointed it out to me. The movie was really pretty, though.
Re: How To Train Your Dragon 2 [SPOILERS]
Even though I can completely relate to her, I agreed. it was out of place, and honestly, very little was funny in this film
I also think Valka's excuse for not going back (what LITTLE of it there was) was the only chip in her character.

I loved this movie. And just another reminder that there will be spoilers here. So do not read if you care about that. Seriously.
I really liked seeing Hiccup and Astrid together. I think they're a cute couple.
I was curious about how well they would handle the disability stuff since that's part of why the first movie was so important to me, and I thought they did a great job. They never drew too much attention to it but they didn't forget about it either. I could see little subtle reminders in the way Hiccup moved. And when Drago was riding Toothless, I swear he wasn't flying as well because he didn't know how to handle his special tail thing like Hiccup.
I should have seen Stoic's death coming. I loved seeing him and Valka play off each other, but they were building it up as a happy reunion so much that I should have seen trouble on the horizon. I thought I was going to get through his death without crying but then I started when Hiccup was talking to his mom after the viking funeral.
By the way, I really like Valka's character.
Am I the only one who thinks Gobber might be gay? There was a line about how "this is why I never got married" and then he said there was another reason and trailed off. My new headcanon is that he's gay.
The ending was a bit too much like the ending of the last one I think, with the giant dragon that they have to fight, but I like the added element of Toothless having to resist its control. And I loved watching the fight scenes. And all the flying scenes were just as incredible as in the first movie.
So, any other thoughts?
Re: How To Train Your Dragon 2 [SPOILERS]
Word of God says he is.
I on the other hand did not. I legit thought we would get a nice ending with a reunited family learning to work together. That destroyed me because he was my favorite character.

I loved it too. Maybe part of it was knowing going in what to expect (good, but not as great as the first film), maybe part of it was me just straight up liking it. Who knows.
Astrid and Hiccup together as a couple was great. They were cute, they supported each other, not once was their relationship treated for drama (ie breaking up, getting back together). I was 'meh' on them in the first film because it screamed of "misunderstood dude gets token badass popular girl of his fantasies", but it got to develop its own groove here.
Oh, God. Stoic's death. Completely didn't see it coming, but as soon as it happened I'm was like HOW COULD I HAVE NOT. From the whole "accepting your duty as future chief/circle of life shit" to "we'll all live together as a family now! yay!" to "I THOUGHT I'D DIE BEFORE I SHARED ANOTHER DANCE WITH YOU". :|
Holy shit, I was caught between facepalming for not seeing the writing on the wall, to applauding the writers for damn straight foreshadowing, to also applauding them for essentially fridging a father while actually keeping the mother as a key player for the rest of the movie.
Which yeah. Valka. Favorite part hands down. Not even because I think her character was flawless anything, but yeah. Mother in animated film who exists, let alone does shit, let alone is a mysterious badass figure who main character is estranged from but can still look up too as a guiding force. Wait, did I say animated? I mean ANY FILM IN GENERAL.
Like people are talking about the progressiveness of movies like the Hunger Games, and Frozen, and Maleficent, but damn. I think that is smack dab right up there on that list.
And she isn't perfect but neither Hiccup nor Stoick hold that against her, and it doesn't devolve into this angsty drama that consumes what little family time they get before Stoick dies. No, they ride dragons, and cook shit, and sing songs and dance, and it isn't all rainbows and smiles and without pain because that separation still happened, but the way they just move past it without just shunting it aside... Agh, I loved it.
Echoing what everyone said. Didn't know about the Word of God now, but definitely figured he was gay.
Don't think the ending was too much like the last one. First ending was about Hiccup's dad accepting him and using tactical knowledge of dragons to physically defeat the big bad (weak on the inside to fire). This one was about the power of friendship and then shounen power-ups and Toothless becoming ALPHA DRAGON. Which maybe falls under using tactical knowledge of dragons to mentally defeat them? But overall I think the tone was very different.
Favorite comedic part of the movie was definitely when the dragon trappers kept throwing Hiccup's not!lightsaber overboard and Astrid's dragon kept fetching it. Favorite general "experiencing the movie" part was when Valka kept stepping from dragon to dragon like it was a dance. Beautifully shot and orchestrated. Loved the first soundtrack and know I'm going to be needing this one too.
Also loved the callbacks to the first movie, especially opening with "This is Berk" and Toothless drawing on the snow with his icicle.
Re: How To Train Your Dragon 2 [SPOILERS]
(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 03:31 am (UTC)(link)The movie felt very...quick. It didn't feel as, uh, meaty? as the first one, even though it had more things happening than the first one. I still really liked it though. I've heard some complaints that Stoic/Hiccup forgave Valka too quickly, but eh. I figured Stoic was too old to care about the hows or whys.
Toothless becoming an alpha was kind of strange? I thought the alphas were dragons with a special mind control ability and not just the strongest dragon? Hmmm. I did love the blue glow/spiky thing Toothless got at the end.
