Re: favorite movies?
1) O Brother Where Art Thou
2) True Grit
3) No Country for Old men
4) Raising Arizona
5) Intolerable Cruelty
Top 3 non-Coen Brothers:
1) Casablanca
2) Repo Man
3) Blade Runner
honorable mentions (because ranking after those three gets silly): The Searchers, Princess Bride, Big Trouble In Little China, They Live, The Apartment, Chinatown, The Godfather, The Fifth Element, The Maltese Falcon, The Natural, Mean Girls, The Rocketeer, all three Indiana Jones movies. Also Vertigo.
Re: favorite movies?
no country for old men was so dark i went into the garden, sat in the grass and stared off into space for like half an hour after watching it for the first time. and then i had a lot of beers. it's definitely their bleakest film.
you seem like you have very good taste so i'm adding every movie you mentioned that i haven't seen to my to-watch list.
Re: favorite movies?
I feel like the fact that we can have totally different favorites is one of the things that makes the Coen Brothers great - they have such a range of stuff. I usually like the lighter, more comedic stuff more, like Intolerable Cruelty which I think is a fun screwball comedy even though I get the impression a lot of people hate it. No Country For Old Men is definitely outside that. It is SO bleak. I totally get your reaction to it. It's crushing. With the ending and everything. But it's also a fantastic film. Every part of it is spot on. Aaargh the Coen Brothers are just so good.
