favorite movies?

i've been trying to watch more movies lately, and recs wouldn't hurt. the movies i've seen can be divided into two categories: the ones i went to see at the theaters with my friends because they wanted to see it (godzilla, the hobbit, every mcu movie ever), and the ones i watched alone at home based on online recommendations. unsurprisingly, my favorites tend to belong to the second category. so here goes:

top 5 non-coen movies:
1. life of brian
2. alien
3. airplane!

5. persépolis

top 5 coen movies:
1. the big lebowski
2. fargo
3. blood simple
4. inside llewyn davis
5. the man who wasn't there

I was just thinking about this.

1. Kung Fu Panda. A little unorthodox, it's not really anyone's favorite DW movie, even if, personally, I think the only one that surpasses it is HTTYD in terms of wellness. I like the message: "You are chosen to be special because you are you.". I have the promotional poster in my room.
2. Tangled (relates a lot to 4)
3. The Lego Movie (relates to 1)
4. ParaNorman
5. Possibly HTTYD 2. Again, I like these messages.

Not true! Kung Fu Panda is my favorite Dreamworks movie. Well, it's neck and neck with Megamind.

well, part of it is because i love folk music, and i've always been fascinated by dave van ronk, so when i learned my favorite screenwriters were going to make a movie about it i completely freaked out. it's just a beautiful equation, you know? like, awesome + awesome = oh my god this is too good.

the movie is both hilarious and very sad and bittersweet (even more so than most of their other films). if a very sensitive person watched it, they'd be simultaneously crying and laughing during several scenes.
it's also not glorifying folk culture in any way, nor is it mocking it. there's no "look at how better the good old days were" message. it's a just a story that happens to be set in this particular world.
a a more shallow note, it proves oscar isaac can grow a very nice beard.

Whenever I get bored and want to see something new, I pull up a list of films that have won awards (Academy, Sundance, IFF, Cannes) and watch anything on the list that I haven't seen that I can stream.

Or I'll pick a director or favorite actor and watch as many of their works as I can find.

I like a lot of movies, but these five I keep coming back to. Eternal Sunshine is by far my top movie, and Singin' in the Rain is up there, but the bottom three are generally subject to change.

I find it hard to pick favourite movies. I weirdly forget ones that really moved me and end up just listing ones that I remember because they made me happy. Anyway, without further ado:
