My theory is that he was supposed to be more important but most people in the audience didn't like him and the writers decided to change their plans.

You mean most people on twitter shouting at A&E and the cast didn't like him so they killed him off, right?

Yep. That's the theory I subscribe to, too.

For me, Neal was a character with a lot of potential, but since these writers do things by the seat of their pants and respond to viewer demand a little too much, they gutted then tossed him aside.

Such a pity, and I didn't even really like the character. :\

My theory is that he was important, but since Hook was hotter with the fangirls, they killed him off. A real shame. They used to attack the actor on twitter, because they were that obsessed with Hook's fictional dick. It was embarrassing.

Neal's death had nothing to do with Hook. Emma and Hook has been on the cards since before Hook was even introduced. They were waiting to get the rights to the character well before either of them showed up.

Yeah, okay.

It doesn't change the fact that Hook/Emma was unbelievably badly written, and they had to force Emma into situations just to get her to be around him. (Let's not forget that the entire reason Emma ~conveniently~ lost her magic was because everyone suddenly touched the idiot ball and decided Hook was the best possible companion for facing Zelena.

Despite Emma's insistence that Hook not come with her because. It was a horrible idea.)
