Yeah. Not here for this woobying of Hook either. Rumple and Regina are still shown as being amoral and yet the guy who tried to kill Belle twice is now a hero.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I disagree. Regina's been plenty woobified and hero-fied (is that even a word?) She was able to give a true love kiss to Henry to break the curse. She was able to use light magic to defeat Zelena after Emma got her magic (temporarily) taken away. Snow of all people tells her that "you love with your whole soul, not just your heart." And if anyone thinks she isn't going to get her happy ending with Robin as soon as they off Marian somehow, I think you're in for a surprise.

I couldn't care less if people don't like Hook. But as far as I'm concerned Hook and Regina are in the same boat. Rumple I agree - he's still firmly in the amoral camp what with killing Zelena and lying to Belle about the dagger. But it seems like they put Regina rather firmly on the side of good during 3B, so I don't see why what they've done with Hook is so much worse than all of that.

Thought this was a True Blood secret and was really confused for a minute.

Haven't seen OUAT, but ummm...he's cute?

I'm over a lot of things about this show, including his unnecessary death. (Still haven't finished the season but I hear that Regina did something terrible again? At this point I really want the characters to pick a side and stay there. I get that they aren't perfect and always doing the right thing isn't IC for them, but the flip-flopping is getting old.)

I almost don't want to watch next season, but idk. Is Mulan coming back, or nothing's been said yet?

At any rate, Neal is one of the last people I would've killed off. (I'm not fond of Hook, so if he had went instead I would've been fine. Probably doesn't help that I'm not a big Rumple fan either, so knowing that he died for the love triangle plus to give Rumple some extra angst upsets me.)

I hear that Regina did something terrible again?

Er, no? Regina was pretty much on the side of the angels in 3B, unless you're talking about flashbacks in which she was pretty much her old self (pun intended).

My theory is that he was supposed to be more important but most people in the audience didn't like him and the writers decided to change their plans.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
You mean most people on twitter shouting at A&E and the cast didn't like him so they killed him off, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. That's the theory I subscribe to, too.

For me, Neal was a character with a lot of potential, but since these writers do things by the seat of their pants and respond to viewer demand a little too much, they gutted then tossed him aside.

Such a pity, and I didn't even really like the character. :\

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
My theory is that he was important, but since Hook was hotter with the fangirls, they killed him off. A real shame. They used to attack the actor on twitter, because they were that obsessed with Hook's fictional dick. It was embarrassing.

God, the more I hear about OUAT, the more I'm glad I bailed on that show before they killed him off for the sake of Emma/Hook.

What a trainwreck.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I've bailed out too. What a shitty show...

A lot of the last season just made me go 8|. It's like they have no idea where the heck they want to go with the show any more, so they're just going everywhere, damn the torpedoes of characterization and full speed ahead!

Except they basically established before he died that Emma and Neal weren't getting together, so... He didn't need to die for the sake of the love triangle because they had a discussion about them not getting together.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
IDK man, given much more time to process and re-establish trust with each other, they could've gotten together again. (Along with the shoddy writing).

But I would've settled for anything other than Neal getting off'd for no sensible reason. (And then Hook finally getting together with Emma after needling her for an entire season. Ew.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP, 100%. The show was never perfect but writing went downhill so badly lately and that was a big part of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's cute that you think Neil's death is permanent. There's no fucking way. The writers clearly have no other ideas about how to stir up drama between Hook/Emma or Rumple/Belle, and trust me, both of those couples will be broken up again (or separated by TrAGiC CirCuMStancE) before the first episode of season four is over.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
DA--unfortunately for me, since Neal was one of my favorite characters, his death is permanent. He might appear in flashbacks next season, quite possibly to retcon him into a shady enough character to make Hook seem like a good guy in comparison, since Hook's coat of whitewash was so quickly and shoddily applied this time around. Sometimes I wonder if there was behind-the-scenes squabbling or something going on, since the actor's departure was met with weird radio silence; his send-off got less notice than for some of the guest stars. Maybe he complained about the quality of the writing. Surely someone on the show must have noticed that the writers are giving the actors sows' ear scripts to try and turn into silk purses.

Pretty sure he's dead for good. Why else make a point in the season finale time-travel plot of having past Rumpelstiltskin find out Bae is going to die, then have Emma beg Rumple not to change anything because "he died a hero" and have Rumple actually listen to her and resign himself to his son's death?

In one scene, Neal's first love and his father have shown themselves willing to give up the chance of saving him. Emma later rescues a random prisoner from Regina, but Neal isn't important enough to screw with the timeline for. And I can't imagine the writers butchering pre-Storybrooke Rumpelstiltskin's characterization so thoroughly except to make it crystal clear that Neal's really, really dead. Rumpelstiltskin had one goal for hundreds of years: finding Bae. Every decision he made, every life he ruined, was bent towards reuniting with his son. For the writers to undermine that, they must intend to take the show in a totally different direction post season 3, since they just removed one foundation myth of the show. Plus they altered Snow and Charming's meet-cute to include Hook.

My guess is that next season will be an Emma/Hook extravaganza, with a Regina/Robin/Marian love triangle until Marian gets killed off like Neal did this season. And bonus Elsa. Maybe some Maleficent, because of the recent movie. Given that my hopes for the show mainly revolved around Rumpelstiltskin, Neal, Belle, Emma, Henry, and Regina (and I didn't ship Emma, Neal, or Regina with anyone, but would have given a lot for Neal/Regina/Emma parent-teacher conference) and a smattering of minor characters (bring back Mulan and Lancelot, dammit) I won't be watching season 4.

I agree his death was stupid and shitty--why not just have had him stay dead earlier in the season? Why bring him back just to make Emma and Henry lose him again? But the most important character after Emma? Nah. Not even close.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the entire reason the entire show even happened is because of Neal? Yeah, I'd put him incredibly high on the list of "important characters".

Rumple never would have even created the curse and fucked with Regina's head in the first place if Neal hadn't disappeared.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think what bugs me the most about Neal death is the assumption that if I'm upset about it, it must be because I shipped him and Emma, when really, I was cool with them just being friends and, along with Regina, raising Henry. I was way more invested in his non-romantic relationships with Rumpelstiltskin, Belle, Mulan, Emma, Henry... even Hook, who at this point I outright loathe because he wasn't so much redeemed as rewritten. I do hate Captain Swan, both as a ship and because the writers flat-out admitted they killed Neal off to make it work. I never understood why Emma's only choice was between Neal and Hook. It was massively contrived, especially since Hook was such a terrible person last season, I can't see Emma just writing that off. For a reluctant alliance, or even just a quick fuck to scratch an itch? Okay. But OUAT's brand of True Love? Hook's actor called him a sociopath. That doesn't go away just because he got a girl, even if the girl is Emma. And as for Neal, I would have loved Tamara to be just a muggle New Yorker to take Emma's place as fish-out-of-water. Oh well.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
and because the writers flat-out admitted they killed Neal off to make it work.

Source for that?

And I agree with everything else you said.

They killed him off specifically because the actor wanted to leave the show (and really, I can't blame him at all.) That's the main reason he was barely in the second half of last season and his death felt rushed and half-assed. OUAT's writers are bad at planning plots in general, its no wonder they screwed this up when they didnt have a whole season to foreshadow it.
