Why else make a point in the season finale time-travel plot of having past Rumpelstiltskin find out Bae is going to die, then have Emma beg Rumple not to change anything because "he died a hero" and have Rumple actually listen to her and resign himself to his son's death?

...because Rumple drank a magic potion two seconds afterwards and forgot all about it? His character growth and acceptance of Bae's death got thrown out the window the minute he made himself forget what the hell just happened. If he doesn't remember it, it doesn't count, and the writers could totally have him obsess over "bringing his son back" or whatever the hell in the next season.

Sorry anon, you have to face the reality here. The amount of "Neal is Dead Forever Deal With It!" shoving they put into that scene alone made me lose hope that he was coming back (and I got second-hand embarrassment from it for some reason). They also named Emma's brother Neal, and if that's not enough to convince you he's dead for real idk what to tell you.

And Rumple seems to be too obsessed with lying to and manipulating Belle's trust to worry about Neal anymore.

But to be fair, I wouldn't put it past the writers to have him have a surprise comeback just to stir shit up.
