(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:52 am (UTC)(link)In one scene, Neal's first love and his father have shown themselves willing to give up the chance of saving him. Emma later rescues a random prisoner from Regina, but Neal isn't important enough to screw with the timeline for. And I can't imagine the writers butchering pre-Storybrooke Rumpelstiltskin's characterization so thoroughly except to make it crystal clear that Neal's really, really dead. Rumpelstiltskin had one goal for hundreds of years: finding Bae. Every decision he made, every life he ruined, was bent towards reuniting with his son. For the writers to undermine that, they must intend to take the show in a totally different direction post season 3, since they just removed one foundation myth of the show. Plus they altered Snow and Charming's meet-cute to include Hook.
My guess is that next season will be an Emma/Hook extravaganza, with a Regina/Robin/Marian love triangle until Marian gets killed off like Neal did this season. And bonus Elsa. Maybe some Maleficent, because of the recent movie. Given that my hopes for the show mainly revolved around Rumpelstiltskin, Neal, Belle, Emma, Henry, and Regina (and I didn't ship Emma, Neal, or Regina with anyone, but would have given a lot for Neal/Regina/Emma parent-teacher conference) and a smattering of minor characters (bring back Mulan and Lancelot, dammit) I won't be watching season 4.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:15 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, sorry to Neal fans, but he's 100% dead, for all the reasons you've listed here. I don't know what happened there. Both the writers and MRJ have insisted that his departure was for storyline reasons and not behind-the-scenes reasons, but I'm not sure I buy it. He barely made an appearance in the Oz storyline up until the episode that he was killed off (and that brief appearance toward the end of the season). To me that just screamed that something else was going on. It felt more like "we have to figure out a way to write this actor out for reasons" than an organic storyline.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:22 am (UTC)(link)...because Rumple drank a magic potion two seconds afterwards and forgot all about it? His character growth and acceptance of Bae's death got thrown out the window the minute he made himself forget what the hell just happened. If he doesn't remember it, it doesn't count, and the writers could totally have him obsess over "bringing his son back" or whatever the hell in the next season.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)And Rumple seems to be too obsessed with lying to and manipulating Belle's trust to worry about Neal anymore.
But to be fair, I wouldn't put it past the writers to have him have a surprise comeback just to stir shit up.
