Same for my current fandom. It's very unsettling the themes that pop up repeatedly in fic but are written as romantic or just part of the road to romance.

This is actually my main beef with a/b/o fic - it's all dub-con or non-con but never labelled as such. But if someone goes into "heat" and is so out of their mind they cannot consent, and that seems to be the whole basis of the kink, which is fine, but own up to it being consent issues and stop trying to say it's romantic and fully consensual.

Sorry, went off on a tangent there, but this issue is a huge pet peeve of mine.

Agreed. I think a/b/o can be considered synonymous with dubcon in the vast majority of fic, though. It doesn't bother me that they don't tag it. I already know to avoid it- they've done their tagging duty afaic.

True true. But my issue is not so much tagging so I can avoid it, but the fact that it's not written or even hinted as having consent issues. There are, admittedly, a few a/b/o fics that purposely do tackle the issue but the vast majority handle it like it's an ideal romantic thing. So yeah, not so much tagging as just a general thought behind the writing.

Considering people going into heat isn't a real thing, I don't know if you can say they can't consent. All the "under the influence and incapable of consent" definitions in real life are scientifically proven and usually a result of drugs, so really, sex pollen and heat and all those could just have a blanket disclaimer of "totally horny but capable of consent."

Minus, you know, the stories that are openly about rape. Those should be clearly labeled.

Whenever I've seen the term 'dubcon' used, it's always been in reference to situations like that - things that don't and can't exist in real life. Which makes sense to me, because if a situation isn't possible in reality, I don't see how you could definitively say that yes, it is consent, or no, it isn't consent.
