Sorry, I'm 100% on the lady's side. You're right, the rest of you who were waiting shouldn't have had to listen to that, but that's the father's fault, and he shouldn't be rewarded for being a shitty parent. Your kid starts making a scene in public, you leave. You don't get to be inconsiderate of everyone around you, and get special treatment on top of that. The lady was there first, she should've been served first. Other people should not be punished because some dude failed to wear a condom.

If the father is by himself and needs to get groceries and is the only person to get groceries, what should he do? Go without?

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Getting groceries? She said they were in a deli.

Anyway, no one said he should have to do without. Either be a considerate person and take the kid outside until they stop crying, or stay inside being a douche, but wait your turn. Other people shouldn't have to wait longer just because this guy has a kid. It's his responsibility to figure it out, not theirs.

She said they were in a deli.

Or he. I just realized I don't know mekkio's gender, so I'm sorry if I got it wrong.

cold cuts and cheeses are groceries.

I was born a chick and I identify as a chick. Though if people online give me the wrong pronoun by accident, I don't really care. Because for the most part, my gender is non-issue in the majority of conversations.

There are delis (or at least deli counters) in most grocery stores nowadays.

Of course he shouldn't go without groceries in that case - but, you know, it's perfectly possible for a single parent to go to the store without dragging their small child along?

But what if he didn't have choice? What if he couldn't find a person to look after his child? What if he couldn't have afforded a child care provider. You should have seen him. He looked exhausted. Completely exhausted. Like this was the last thing on his to-do list and all he wanted was bed. My heart went out to him.

Uhm, sorry, but you don't need a babysitter every time you make a quick trip to the store?
Even very young children will be just fine if you leave them alone for half-an-hour/an hour or something when they are fed and cleaned up and asleep; heck, it will probably even affect them less then dragging them along while getting groceries.
At least this is how my mom handled things and it worked out just fine.

Holy shit, you are never supposed to leave toddlers alone by themselves at home. NEVER! What was your mom thinking? I don't care if you turned out fine. That's just asking for something awful to happen. Never mind that's a quick way for you to lose your child to child services if this information got out.

In the state of North Carolina, where this happened, it is illegal to leave a child under the age of eight home alone.

If you were discovered doing so, not only could you lose your child but you could wind up in jail for endangering a child.

So, no, you can't leave the child behind. Even if it is just napping. Never mind if that kid wakes up and you are not there, what a traumatic experience for that toddler.

Oh, in that case, he father of course was right to not leave his kid alone & our diferent opinions on this matter are most likely due to cultural and legal differences. What my mom did was neither illegal nor uncommon /not from the US.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, it sounds to me like maybe the guy deserves to lose his kid.
This just seems to be yet further proof that single fathers aren't competent at childcare.

Wow, what the fuck. You have to be a troll, you can't be that stupid.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck you! I'd rather see a dad trying to do the right thing as much as humanly able to for his kid (even to the point of exhuastion) than have my situation had never having known my dad.

Again, FUCK YOU!

Re: Vent thread

100% agree with you. I know it's frustrating and you just want to get your shopping done, but you are not doing anyone - not you, not your kid, not the other shoppers - any favors by acting this way. If your kid is throwing a fit that doesn't stop, take them directly out of the store and either wait the fit out or leave. It's a pain in the ass but responsible parenting often is.

Also, that old lady could have her own issues and backstory. Maybe try thinking about that rather than just assuming she was a super rude snobby lady who doesn't care about children or something.

I can definitely understand the frustration of the situation but I disagree with where you place your frustration (you being the OP, not the anon I agree with...obviously).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
This. If my sister and I started throwing a fit when we were in the store, we got taken out to go sit in the car until we calmed down.

We learned pretty quickly that fussing didn't accomplish anything other than making the shopping trip take longer and the other shoppers weren't subjected to our tantrums.

Seriously. It was exactly the same for my brother and I.

I don't understand why people are getting all bent out of shape at the notion of expecting people to be responsible parents. I guess that's just too much to ask these days.
