Nah, sorry but I strongly disagree. The lady was absolutely right to insist that she should be served first when she was there first. I sure would have done the same, had I been in her position.
That guy having a toddler with him? His decision, his responsibility, not the lady's. And I get that a crying child is annoying, but yet again, it was the dad's decision to take the little one with him to the store. And who knows, maybe the woman you are angry with was in a hurry herself or had a long day at work or whatever?

What, should he have left the kid outside like a dog? Leave it in the car and hope nothing happens? Give it to a stranger on the street while he pops into the store? Seriously, the guy was presumably alone with the kid, otherwise he could have gone outside while his companion stands in line at the counter.

I'm with Mekkio, the lady was incredibly rude. I get being annoyed when you had a long day or whatever (I'm not claiming I'm always gracious about having to do the polite thing), but actually being snippy to the employee? The poor guy was just doing his job, especially since the supervisor apparently also thought that the father should be served first. If the woman was in a hurry herself she could have said so without snapping at the employee. A quick "Excuse me, I'm really in a hurry" would have been enough and understandable.

No, obviously he shouldn't have left the kid outside like a dog or in the car, but he could have left it at home? A child will be just fine if you leave them alone for a short while, there's no reason to drag them along wherever you go.

And I have worked in retail and had customers being rude to me over rules I did not make. That comes with the job, just as some customers being rude for whatever other reason do. Does it suck? Yes. Can I change that? No. And I would have totally gotten why hat lady was angry and do think the supervisor made the wrong call, so there's that.

You don't leave small children home alone. It's illegal in most states.

Okay, if it's illegal in the US, I understand why the father chose to take the child with him. I still disagree that he should have been served first.

I don't know what he should've done with the kid, but that's kind of the point: I don't need to know what he should've done with the kid, and no one else does either. It's his kid, it's his job to figure out how to be a decent member of society without expecting people to cater to him just because he has a kid.

I don't see how expecting to be served first when you were there first is "being snippy" to the employee. But if she was, you're right, she shouldn't have directed her frustration at the employee. She should've been pissed at the supervisor who was enabling the entitled asshat of a father.

Entitled asshat? Jesus. He wasn't demanding to be served first. It was the supervisor who was showing some kindness. It was me who thought he should have been shown some mercy. He demanded squat.

What do you have against parents? Are you one of those people who simply hate children and the people who have them?

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, maybe that was unwarranted if he wasn't insisting on being served first, but I do think he was being at least a bit self absorbed for subjecting everyone else there to his kid's behavior. If your kid acts that way, you leave. It's not everyone else's responsibility to deal with your child misbehaving. And I disagree with the way the supervisor handled it. It's not fair to penalize another customer by making them wait longer just because they don't happen to have a kid with them.

I don't hate children or anyone who has them, I just don't think having them means you should get special privileges. And I have nothing against parents who are considerate of others, I have something against parents who think it's the responsibility of the rest of society to put up with their misbehaving kid.

In my experience, people who act all high and mighty about what parents should and shouldn't do about their children acting out would be the first to have a breakdown should they one day be in the same situation. And I say that as someone who is not a big fan of small children and self absorbed parents.

person you're referring to

I'm not acting high and mighty. I understand how exhausting and unpleasant and downright awful it is to have kids (as I'm constantly hearing from the people around me who have them), which is why I've decided not to have them. All I'm saying is that people should have to deal with the consequences of their decisions. If you want kids, that's great for you, but when they throw a fit in public, YOU take care of it, you don't subject the rest of the public to it.

I think the lady should have been served first. But I think it's bitchy and totally obnoxious that she demanded to be served first. Unless someone specifically cut in front of you in line or something, you are being an annoying customer. Even as a fellow customer, I get secondhand embarrassment and rage seeing people act like pricks.

This.

Also, and I say this as someone who works in retail, the resulting fall-out usually takes longer than waiting for that one customer to be served before you.
