Things to do to improve a bad day

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
My day has been pretty bad, F!S. The kind that has you curled in a ball on the sofa feeling as if maybe it would be better to just give up and stop fighting your corner.

So what do you all do when you have a day like that? Any tips on how to lift your mood?

A facial mask, a long shower, a foot bath, and then put on something cute and dance around.

My day has been absolutely awful, too, and I've been tooling around wondering what the hell to do about it.

So now I'm going to take a long bubble bath, do a mask, and give myself a foot care treatment. Thank you for that suggestion! I really mean it!

Play free online games, like neopets for example. Silly little games and pretty pets always cheer me up.

This. Or watch movies that make you feel good (my picks are either Road to El Dorado or Cats Don't Dance).

Presuming I can get out of it.

a) Dance like no-one's watching (cause they aren't)
b) do something nice for myself (bath, face mask, my nails etc)
c) watch something that might make me happy.
d) read smut.

You could cook something fancy that takes some time. Or treating yourself to something nice of the body care kind.

I suggest NOT doing things like playing games, that could result in alienating yourself even more though. Playing games or watching tv always makes me feel worse afterwards, if I was feeling already bad, but that could be just me.

ia, I'm the same about Tv and games.

Yeah, I always end up wallowing in my own misery at the end of any of it...

Exercise! Seriously. Just get up, put on some headphones and go out for a long walk or a light jog. Without getting into the fine details, the act of physical activity essentially kickstarts your brain into making its own antidepressants. It's the only thing that will reliably work for absolutely anybody.

Nope. Exercise just makes some people tired and sweaty and miserable.

No, it doesn't. If you exercise too hard you're bound to enjoy it less than you should, but notice I didn't advise hard exercise.

To be frank though, if you are so out of shape that you can't stand a walk without being in pain, then you need the exercise for more than just emotional reasons. Mild discomfort is the least of your problems if you're that far gone.

nayrt

This is going to be ironic, but every person I've ever met who's said 'this thing works for everyone!' has been wrong. Making generalisations like that is usually a bad move because when someone who has a different experience comes out and says, 'Um, not quite everyone', you either have to eat crow or look like an ass while you scramble to cover yours.

It's not a generalization, it's about as close as you get to psychological fact. It's been tested for decades and the biological mechanisms are well known to exercise science as well as psychology.

Unless you happen to be chronically physiologically ill (and even then, exercise can have a positive effect on some disease processes) exercise treats emotional lows, depression, anxiety, common body image issues... I mean, yeah, I'm assuming that here "I had a bad day" doesn't mean "I had a bad day during my cancer treatment". That would be a different story.

However, OP didn't post anything to suggest that was the case.

As much as you might not like it, fifty years of studies suggest that yes, exercise does work this way for everyone. In fact, it works for everyone regardless of gender, BMI, and even age. It works for short term difficulties and it works for long term problems.

I really can't overemphasize it, because there's basically zero downside no matter who you are or what your lifestyle or life stage is. The only circumstances in which exercise can be a detriment or ineffectual are in people with OCD, certain eating disorders that can trigger OCD behaviour, or people who have entered the process of dying. That's it.

So get up and move more. Seriously. It will work.

Eating amazing food. If you make it yourself or buy it. It helps me. It also makes my body feel good (mm, spinach).

If there's anything low-key you can cross off a To-Do List, that can be nice. Like laundry. Which always smells really good, too.

I watch comfort movies where I can escape my crappy day. Usually one of the Star Wars or Lord of the Rings movies, sometimes Thor.

I always find cleaning/sorting out quite therapeutic when I'm upset, whether it's washing up or vacuuming or putting away all my shit. Plus, at the end of it all you get a clean living area. But if you don't feel like doing that, I suggest having a long shower or bath until you feel clean/ refreshed. If it's daytime, go for a walk, find a coffee shop and sit there and read for an hour or two. Or go see a movie by yourself that you've wanted to see for a while. Or just wander/ window shop. Whatever it is, just make sure it's making you happy/distracting you, and tell yourself that you deserve it.

If it's nightime, still have that shower/bath. Do some stretches if you have some aches or pains. Make your bed nicely for when you go to sleep. Make yourself a calming hot drink (or have a glass of wine). And put on a movie or a TV show that you like and that calms you, or read a book that distracts you. Or webcomic/fanfic. Or just stupid shit on the internet. Make sure it's something that makes you happy/distracts you, and let yourself veg.

I have a playlist of happy songs and a go-to list of favourite fics. If all else fails, I watch Star Wars, which is my favourite comfort trilogy.
