Thank you for noticing the issue with his cocaine use, it hasn't occurred to me before. That's a very good observation, nonnie, and as a Holmesian you should feel good.

I agree that his looks are decidedly non-Holmesian, too, though maybe "robust" isn't quite the word (as cushlamochree pointed out). And I understand being unable to get into his portrayal because of this - such cases irritate me, too (Robert Downey Jr., I'm eyeing you very hard indeed. And you, Benedict Cumbercucumber). I think looks are very important, especially for such a richly described character. Granted, I kind of reconciled myself with the fact that all kinds of weird actors will play Holmes, so I don't necessarily turn away from an adaptation if it's otherwise good, but the frustration is definitely there. YES HIS LOOKS ARE IMPORTANT. Not just the acting ability of whatever guy you hired.
