i for one don't mind the robust look one bit. in fact, i've just decided that the next sherlock holmes should be played by vin diesel. he also will be shirtless during the entire movie.

I give this my whole-hearted agreement, and two thumbs up.

Vin's getting a little long in the tooth. Fracious Arnaud is my suggestion. He can keep his brooding eyes and boyish curls. And the leather pants he wore in The Borgias.

that man is pretty damn hot, and the way you spelled his name is hilarious. it's like a blend of his actual name and 'precious'.

He's one of the definitions of sexy. And I couldn't be bothered to google his real name.

I like a robust Holmes. He should be robust. He's a very robust character in the stories. Of course, most of the adaptations that display him as robust also want to make him wacky or badass in ways that aren't really true to my perception of the character either, which is why I'm not a huge fan of most adaptations. He's robust but that doesn't make him an action star.

I share your feelings about the cocaine though!

'Robust, robust' is echoing in my head.)

I think you're right in that he possesses considerable physical strength and is certainly not a sickly man, but I also believe that the OP was lamenting Roxburgh's un-Holmesian looks and worded their complaints poorly. They probably meant to say that Roxburgh is not thin, not pale enough, and does not have this look of general sharpness and angular-ness Holmes is supposed to have. His features aren't exactly "chiseled", either.

Other than that, IA.

You know what, you're right, I probably did misread it.

THAT SAID I also, separately, think that I tend to emphasize those qualities of Holmes a little less than other people do. I would think of him more as wiry than as thin, I guess. And while Roxburgh doesn't really look the way I think Holmes looks, he's not that much further than most other actors who've played the part.

I should also say that I haven't seen this adaptation, because I don't really watch a lot of adaptations, mostly for that reason: the actors they get to play the part never really come across as Holmes for me. It's not the actors fault, either, I don't think there's any actor who could really pull off Holmes for me - he's a very distinctive personality in my mind. In other words, my standards are probably just too high, so that almost no one meets them.

Ehhhh. Holmes is described as being tall and "excessively lean". While had excellent stamina and physical abilities, his appearance wouldn't have suggested that, necessarily.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I clearly haven't watched this in too long. I'd forgotten how hot Rox was as Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Richard Roxburgh is weirdly hot in general. Watching him as Dracula in Van Helsing was really weird. "This is an angsty, whiny, entitled bastard who literally hangs off the ceiling to moan about his (lack of) emotions, why is he so hot??" I mean, black-on-black with the tight-waisted coat, yes, obviously, also the snark and the flounce, but still. Why?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
He is the ONLY reason I saw Van Helsing (in the theatre, too, didn't wait for DVD), which is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I didn't even know who he was at the time, either-- I just saw him in the trailer, thought he was weirdly hot, and knew I just had to see this hot mess for his sake.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
GOD YES. I saw him in "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and pretty much went head over heels.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-06-15 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Rox? This secret is a linguistic delight for me. First robust, now this.

I've watched it not long ago after that secret with him a few weeks back.

I either like something or don't and I liked this version of SH. Watson was great and one of my favorite Watsons. I didn't pay attention to a cocain thing, but now that you mention I agree. They probably didn't want to slow down the plot, but wanted to include a drugs detail.

This is my favourite version of HOUND though, Ian Hart as Watson is a delight.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-06-15 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, your favourite! I'm weirdly happy to have found someone who loves it, even though I do prefer different versions myself (for a variety of reasons, one of which is that I'm angry at the Roxburgh version for replacing Murder Rooms. I'm shallow, period).

I think it gets much undeserved hate, mostly because it went for a darker and more troubled Holmes&Watson dynamics. It saddens me that people think that more problems=less friendship.
donutsweeper: (Default)

[personal profile] donutsweeper 2014-06-15 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a very different dynamic, true. But fairly faithful to where they were in relation to one another in that period of their partnership (or I like to think anyway). It's an unusual case for them- Holmes is absent for the majority of it and thus lying to Watson in what Watson's role is. The writers also chose to make it even more violent than ACD wrote it, with Watson getting shot and then having to save Holmes' life, but it led to such a wonderful scene where they discuss their feelings without actually saying anything.

(Sorry, I have a tendency to prattle on about this version. I do apologize.)

Thank you for noticing the issue with his cocaine use, it hasn't occurred to me before. That's a very good observation, nonnie, and as a Holmesian you should feel good.

I agree that his looks are decidedly non-Holmesian, too, though maybe "robust" isn't quite the word (as cushlamochree pointed out). And I understand being unable to get into his portrayal because of this - such cases irritate me, too (Robert Downey Jr., I'm eyeing you very hard indeed. And you, Benedict Cumbercucumber). I think looks are very important, especially for such a richly described character. Granted, I kind of reconciled myself with the fact that all kinds of weird actors will play Holmes, so I don't necessarily turn away from an adaptation if it's otherwise good, but the frustration is definitely there. YES HIS LOOKS ARE IMPORTANT. Not just the acting ability of whatever guy you hired.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Holmes isn't flimsy; he's one of those wiry people who is very resilient...

What?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Does this mean that RDJ looks frail to you? For that matter, Cumberbatch also looks pretty robust to me? Unless being unbelievably white skinned translates to you automatically as looking unhealthy?

Well, but I am even more pale naturally than him and I am in the bloom of health and looking pretty robust if I do say so myself... Also, a lot of terribly white-skinned British people would be happy to disabuse you of this idea that totally white skin = being weak or in poor health or whatever the opposite of robust may be? :D

Also, the Holmes canon has been trampled all over for centuries and THIS (substance abuse while working cases) is what you take exception to? This does not a secret make: like most human beings, you have lots of personal, highly subjective opinions that others may or may not agree with. Full stop. Deal with it. Instead of trying to justify it with hardly tenable arguments that can be made to look unbalanced so easily.

Watch and learn: "I find Cumberbatch's portrayal of Holmes in the 'Sherlock' TV show to be an insult to the original character".

Done. Agree with me or not, I don't really care, I am just fine with you or the majority of the TV viewing public holding an opposite view, in fact. Seriously, what's the point of people all having exactly the same opinions? We're human beings, not robots. Just don't try proselytizing, especially not using such untenable arguments.

For instance, see what my arguments for the above could be:
"Holmes never behaves like such an unbearable twit in canon. Sherlock Holmes defining characteristic was how surprisingly kind he was to people in need. It's the rich and the aristocrats he often had no time or respect for, according to his biographer Watson."

Such arguments may justify my opinions about Cumberbatch's version of Holmes to myself, but I highly doubt any fans of the 'Sherlock' series would be impressed and call them justified. That is not a secret, it's a subjective opinion. See?
