... Alright, it's official. Clearly I've been lurking in the wrong part of the DA fandom, because I've seen a lot of hate for Anders. And I like Anders, dammit!

Also, on the woobie part: there's a lot of leeway between a totally irredeemable asshole and a poor blameless woobie. IMO you can like a character all the while acknowledging that they've pulled some stupid or downright hurtful moves. And Anders made a lot of bad choices. BLOWING UP THE CHANTRY IS NOT GOING TO CONVINCE PEOPLE TO JOIN YOUR SIDE, DAMMIT.

(Granted, I don't know what his character was like in the previous game(s?) since I haven't played Awakening or Origins yet.)

I agree with you, but a lot of the fandom does treat Anders like a "poor blameless woobie". Not everyone of course, but wayyyy more than I'd like to the point where I literally don't think some of them have played the game. For God's sake, we're talking about a character who is visibly happy if you actually choose to send Fenris back into slavery despite the fact that Anders constantly compares the treatment of mages to slavery to make a point. Notably, he's the only party member who is happy when you do so and the others give you disapproval points and call you out for being an asshole. Conversely if you end up killing Anders in the game, Fenris at least looks solemn even if he's not exactly weeping over it. And yet it's not surprising that a lot of Anders fic makes Fenris (and sometimes even Hawke) out to be waaaay more of an asshole than he really is and have Anders be an innocent victim. As someone who actually enjoys reading fic about mentally unstable/asshole!Anders, this disappoints me

Oh, I have no doubt that part of the fandom loves to woobify the guy. Like I said, I've just happened to stumble across a lot of Anders!bashing.

Dear god, Anders is such an asshole when it comes to Fenris. I could never bring myself to hand Fenris over to Danarius even out of morbid curiosity, but I did go to Youtube to see how that scenario plays out. There's no way you can blame that reaction on Justice/Vengeance, either. Like, come on, dude. You can be so nice when I'm talking to you at the clinic, why do have to do and say these hurtful things when I let you tag along on certain quests?!

Oh man, the banter between them if you take both of them on quests is not pretty. I almost wanted my Hawke to turn around and give them both time-outs.

I brought Varric with me practically everywhere because he gets along with everyone and his banter with them is pretty awesome (also because I need someone to open hard chests and traps for me).

Ohh, Varric. Best. Companion. Ever. I took him everywhere, despite the fact that I played with a rogue Hawke and didn't really need other rogues to do my lock-picking for me. I loved hearing him interact with the other party members, especially Fenris and Merril.

Man, hearing all the little ways Varric looks out for Merril (helping her find her way home in the middle of the night! paying people off so she doesn't get mugged!) was so sweet. It's little character moments like that that really make me love him so much! And yeah, I just love how he seems pretty chill with everyone.

This, so much! I love how he's always going on about how he's just a businessman and a storyteller, but secretly goes out of his way to keep the rest of the gang safe in his own way.

I hope he's romanceable in DA:I cuz that'd be epic, but I know that Bianca would probably try to kill me if I tried anything. :c

See, I'm not really sure if I'd want to romance Varric, because then I'd just feel bad for Bianca. He named his damn crossbow after her, and it's the one story he won't tell.

... But then again, it's not like the player is forced to romance anyone. So if they do make him a potential LI in Inquisition, it's just going to be one of those things that I can easily ignore.

At the very least, I hope my character can ask if they can touch his chest hair for good luck. XD

I always head-canoned that everyone in Kirkwall was at least a little bit attracted to Varric, so surely he wouldn't mind the Inquisitor touching - or at least admiring - his chest hair as long as s/he asked nicely! :P

Idk, we never actually find out *who* Bianca is - for all we know she could have been his sister [and an excuse for not being attracted to whoever was hitting on him at the moment XD;;].

But yeah, I'm not sure I'd want him as a LI either. Mainly because, epic as it could be, I *also* loved the epic friendship he had with Hawke and I wouldn't mind seeing another one of those.

Ugh, as much as I dislike Fenris (and I dislike him a lot) I couldn't bring myself to turn him over to Danarius either, and it certainly wouldn't be in-character for my Hawke.

But he's so ~passionate~ about his cause and it's so ~romantic~ to ride off into the sunset with him as the ashes of the Chantry flutter beautifully in the wind or some other BS purple prose.

No, seriously, he's a piece of shit, and even David Gaider admitted the romance with him and Fenris is like Twilight. I want to know what part of the fandom you're in, because all I've seen are apologists.

Yeah, but that was kind of my point? I like his character, but I'm still aware that he made a lot of bad choices during the events of the game (e.g. blowing up the damn Chantry), and I don't see why I should try to romanticize his actions. That's a thing that can be done, right?

I'm not actively in the fandom, but I do lurk for fic, and for some reason I've come across a lot of Anders!bashing in those. I also remember reading a comment somewhere (Dragon Age wikia? Probably?) about someone wishing Anders would make an appearance in DA:I so that the player could "zero dark thirty the fucker". So yeah, pretty sure there's also a decent amount of people who don't feel like woobifying him.
