At first this made me kind of uncomfortable because I was like "huh, sexy story where men get beat up is pretty acceptable in fandom, not so much the other way around". But reading the comments, I realized: there IS a different connotation behind men and women being beat up in fantasy, and actually there really isn't outrage when the woman is playing the part of the hero. (at least ime)

There is no difference.

This is why 40% of domestic abusers are woman and we still have only one shelter for abuse men.

You were right, and they talked you out of it with double sided sexist stereotypes.
