One of my friends tried this shit on Facebook

We've been arguing for a while about social progress, and he's been saying that if I'm really pro-gender equality, why I am calling myself a feminist isntead of a gender egalitarian. It's been a long debate but I think I'm gaining ground on this.

Anyway, he reposted a screencap of the radfems' tweets. I just said this is why I'm a feminist - because otherwise, a good movement gets taken over by stupid people.

Either I made my point, broke his brain, or both.

In theory, I suppose "gender egalitarian" is better - at least in that grammatically, it seems to stress equality between the genders, which is what we're going for. But the fact of the matter is, it's irresponsible, I think, to imply that the problems men face for being men are equal to the problems that women face for being women. Women generally have the shorter end of the stick, and I think in most cases, by asserting women's equality, we get gender equality. Now, I do think there are issues men face, and I do think they are worth discussing, but I feel like they can fall under feminism just fine. And I won't even blame "the patriarchy" for the problems of men, because I find that a little obnoxious.

But yeah. The real point here is that feminism is a very broad word and a lot of people call themselves feminists while disagreeing on what feminism entails. If you believe the genders are equal and support women making strides toward that equality, you are a feminist.

To demonstrate how broad and nebulous feminism, I've often said that there are only really two things that unite all feminists: "1.) a desire for women and men to be equal, and 2.) acknowledgement that right now, they aren't".

I often ask my friends things like, "Do you think men and women should be equal? Do you agree that right now, they are not equal? Congratulations, you're a feminist!" (Mostly to make a point).

I don't like radfems anymore than most MRAs, but that doesn't mean I'm going to let them stop me from fighting for women's rights and gender equality. "Did Malcolm X and the Black Panthers stop MLK or Rosa Parks from pursuing black rights? No? Then why should I quit? :P"
