I think Nightwing may be a bad example here. Bad things tend to happen to him pretty much all the time.

That being said I sort of agree with the overall sentiment, but I put it down to DC having a bit of a revival of 90s silliness. I blame Dan Didio and Bob Harras.

OP compared Nightwing to Nightwing, though. If s/he were comparing Nu52 Nightwing to pre-reboot Captain Marvel, that would be silly, or just the two covers. But I feel like a 30-issue sample size of Nightwing to Nightwing is fairly solid, statistically.

Christ, he didn't even bleed when Devin Grayson was doing terrible things to him. And now he's gone and been crucified (I was absolutely horrified when I saw that cover on the right, fyi).

My point was that bad things have been happening to Nightwing looong before New 52. (It's also why I roll my eyes when someone says New 52 ruined Superman -- sorry, but the Superman books were unreadable for about a year before New 52, it's nothing new.) The only difference is that DC likes to throw more blood on their covers these days because they're tryhard. What happens to Dick between the covers has largely been the same kind of borderline whumpfic it's been since that weirdo Devin Grayson started the trend like 10 years ago.

Now I'm tempted to do a count of bloody panels. Except then I'd have to buy the Nu52 and….that went badly last time. There was rage. Lots and lots of rage.

Torrents do the job just fine. Too expensive to cover the whole lineup anyway, what with Geoff Johns being creative head meaning ALMOST EVERYTHING TIES TOGETHER SOMEHOW.

I torrented RHatO for a few months after I rage-quit the paper versions. There was screaming (to be fair, I'm really attached to Roy Harper and DESPERATELY want Jason Todd to have peace and…no. Just no.). Not sure I could handle that much of nu52 Dick without crying. I just read my NTT omnibuses over and over again. ^^;

I like Roy and Jason too (am I the only one who gives post-resurrection Jason a New Jersey accent?) but I don't hate myself enough to read anything by Scott Lobdell.

I started with both Outlaws AND Superboy. I didn't think they could be so. damn. terrible.

(Jason always talked with some sort of accent in my brain. Kinda New Jersey, kind of Boston, all self-confidence when he was a kid. )
