I don't read this, but it's actually sort of hot...

It's one of those things that is hot in fanworks, imo, but should never NEVER happen in canon. But, YMMV.

(*glances downthread at mention of one of the writers* see also: The same character getting completely destroyed mentally and then raped by a woman when he had no idea which way is up.)

Ah, didn't know that - that's some pretty hardcore canon.

Devin Grayson should never have been anywhere near that book. It's not that there's necessarily anything wrong with having your name legally changed to be closer to that of a fictional character, but when you then manage to worm your way into writing the book about that character that's when readers should start being worried.

I think Nightwing may be a bad example here. Bad things tend to happen to him pretty much all the time.

That being said I sort of agree with the overall sentiment, but I put it down to DC having a bit of a revival of 90s silliness. I blame Dan Didio and Bob Harras.

OP compared Nightwing to Nightwing, though. If s/he were comparing Nu52 Nightwing to pre-reboot Captain Marvel, that would be silly, or just the two covers. But I feel like a 30-issue sample size of Nightwing to Nightwing is fairly solid, statistically.

Christ, he didn't even bleed when Devin Grayson was doing terrible things to him. And now he's gone and been crucified (I was absolutely horrified when I saw that cover on the right, fyi).

My point was that bad things have been happening to Nightwing looong before New 52. (It's also why I roll my eyes when someone says New 52 ruined Superman -- sorry, but the Superman books were unreadable for about a year before New 52, it's nothing new.) The only difference is that DC likes to throw more blood on their covers these days because they're tryhard. What happens to Dick between the covers has largely been the same kind of borderline whumpfic it's been since that weirdo Devin Grayson started the trend like 10 years ago.

Now I'm tempted to do a count of bloody panels. Except then I'd have to buy the Nu52 and….that went badly last time. There was rage. Lots and lots of rage.

The crucifixion cover made me feel more than a little nauseous. I'm not even reading the damn title, and…yeah.

Granted, Red Hood and the Outlaws covers make me want to cry on a regular basis. I should just create a pull list at my FLCBS so I don't have to browse and see the horror. I'm such a wimp. :(

(as Deathtoll pointed out, Dick has been poor for a good quarter century. It's just more blatant now.)

I thought this cover was a bit extreme and graphic, but then again DC did one with The Joker holding the skin he cut off his face, right? This must not even faze them anymore.

Ugh, the DCnU has been treating Dick so, so shittily. And that's saying something, because Devin Grayson used to write him.

The DCnU is like the worst of the 90s mixed with the most sadistic of fanworks and…I just can't do it. I mean, Dick-centered angst and misery was a staple in pre-reboot, too, but he got breaks and people to sit him down and yell at him when he got out of control. Plus his misery was usually of his own over-acheiving and/or commitment-fearing making, Devin Grayson notwithstanding. :(
