The crucifixion cover made me feel more than a little nauseous. I'm not even reading the damn title, and…yeah.

Granted, Red Hood and the Outlaws covers make me want to cry on a regular basis. I should just create a pull list at my FLCBS so I don't have to browse and see the horror. I'm such a wimp. :(

(as Deathtoll pointed out, Dick has been poor for a good quarter century. It's just more blatant now.)

I thought this cover was a bit extreme and graphic, but then again DC did one with The Joker holding the skin he cut off his face, right? This must not even faze them anymore.

It should faze them, though. Once in a while, sure, especially when the stakes are high. The Death in the Family cover with Batman carrying Jason's battered body on a field of black is generally agreed on as one of the most powerful Batman covers, regardless of how the individual feels about the actual storyline.

The idea that things as graphic as stringing Nightwing up and crucifying him WITH HIS OWN ESKRIMA STICKS is somehow commonplace is really, really sick.

I don't disagree! It just seems like DC is past the point of caring. Are their sales good? I wonder if this kind of thing is selling for them. I've heard very little from older DC fans about the new titles, so I just assume lots of folks have dropped them altogether.

Research mode ACTIVATE!!

[personal profile] phyllomania 2014-06-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
*checks numbers…less quickly than expected*

It did absolutely nothing for DC. In May 2010, before the reboot, DC had 35% of the market share in terms of units, and Marvel had 45%. (31% and 41%, respectively, by dollar)

In May 2012, after the reboot, they had 36% of the market share to Marvel's 38% (33% and 35%)

Last month DC had 34% of the market share to Marvel's 37% (30% and 35%)

I seriously doubt that there is a statistical significance to the drop. But it is also of note that there is no rise, which means DC did gain readers, but at the expense of all the old readers they lost.

The biggest thing of note is that the non-big two are gaining market share (Dark Horse is up 3% since 2010; Image up a whopping 7%, largely, but not entirely, thanks to the Walking Dead; and IDW is up 1.5%).

In terms of TITLES the Big Two tend to split the top 300, although the weekly Batman Eternal is currently skewing titles in DC's favor.

Those are some interesting numbers; I assumed that DC lost readers, but it sounds like they gained almost as many back. Still, the fact that they didn't make any huge profit off entirely rebooting and reorganizing their universe is telling. You made a bad decision, DC.

I'm glad for Image, tbh. I love Image (and not even for Walking Dead).

There is also a weirdly high number of comic fans who buy titles just to support comics. Even if they're terrible. I personally know at least three such people. Those are possibly skewing the numbers.

You made a bad decision, DC.

They will never, ever admit it. They will cling to the initial surge in sales as proof that it worked, and just say that people aren't buying comics rather than admit they are making shitty ones. :(

...The fact that Image just climbed into bed with Brubaker for FIVE WHOLE YEARS makes me more thrilled than any contract announcement should. :D

Ah, I don't get that at all. On some level I can understand wanting to support the medium, but comics are damn expensive to be buying things that you don't even particularly like or feel aren't good. Still, I guess if you have the extra cash...

That's most companies, unfortunately. I hope you're wrong, but you probably aren't.

Ooo, I hadn't heard about that! Isn't he doing Velvet? (I've been meaning to read that.) Or is it another comic?

One of my three known parties is supporting a specific franchise. The other two...not a clue.

Brubaker and Philips have an unprecedented carte blanche deal with Image. If they create it, Image will publish it. Which is awesomesauce. And, yes, Velvet is his, with the glorious pretty that is Steve Epting's art.
