How is this any more demeaning than dressing kids up in other silly costumes? Or taking the obligatory baby-butt photos? Or covering a baby in [insert sports team here] apparel? Or dressing girls in some kind of frothy pink frippery, and boys in those impractical little sailor suits?

And some kids get into fandom way young. I've been a Trekkie since age 3. My friend's kid cosplays as book characters at every opportunity. Her first one was at age 2 1/2. She wanted to be the Paper Bag Princess. So she made a bag dress (OK, she tore holes in a bag and pulled it over herself, but she was pretty outspoken about "making my costume".)
