In Japanese they have pronouns that make avoiding identifying gender pretty easy while in English it's kind of awkward to dodge it (though dubs like Soul Eater did kind of address it by having characters refer to Crona as "him" just for the sake of simplicity while they still acknowledge a couple of times that they're not quite sure if Crona is a boy or girl. They had Medusa, the only person who actually would know their real gender, refer to Crona as "it" which is pretty fitting since she's an awful person) so I kind of get why they decided to go ahead and make Hanji a girl
