I was disappointed with the dub too! I think my biggest beef with it is that it felt like almost no work was put into understanding/matching the characters. Armin and Eren's voices sound too old (to me, at least), Levi and Mikasa's voices don't really match their stoic personalities, and Hanji's voice is very feminine sounding when she's supposed to be a gender ambiguous character. And so on. The fan voice acting that I've heard on youtube is literally so much better

You know that in the anime she was written as a girl, right?

I don't mean that she should be portrayed as nonbinary, but that character wise Hanji is supposed to be veering towards androgynous and non-feminine. I think it's a bad understanding of her character to give her a typically feminine sounding voice. (Hanji is also one of my fav Shingeki characters, so I'm very picky about her characterization too)

I agree but at the same time I understand their choice. In Japanese they have pronouns that make avoiding identifying gender pretty easy while in English it's kind of awkward to dodge it (though dubs like Soul Eater did kind of address it by having characters refer to Crona as "him" just for the sake of simplicity while they still acknowledge a couple of times that they're not quite sure if Crona is a boy or girl. They had Medusa, the only person who actually would know their real gender, refer to Crona as "it" which is pretty fitting since she's an awful person) so I kind of get why they decided to go ahead and make Hanji a girl

My issue isn't making Hanji a girl, or giving her pronouns. I personally don't have any issue with her being portrayed as female (although I have nothing against nonbinary headcanons too). But character wise she's supposed to be more androgynous and masculine. Giving her a typical feminine sounding voice is just so meh to me.

I get what you're saying but have you ever noticed how hard it is to make a voice sound androgynous in English? It's much harder than in Japanese. There's really only two things you can do, make it nasally or make it raspy. If neither of those things fit the character you're shit out of luck. The only time I've ever seen it successfully pulled off is Envy from FMA, and that went the nasally route. The raspy route's usually transparently a woman anyway.

Yeah, true. Maybe 'androgynous' isn't the right word I should have used. I still don't like how they did Hanji's voice in the dub. Have you listened to the 'Attack on Space' fan voice acting thing on youtube? I think that's an example of how Hanji's voice could have been done in English.

But Hanji sounded super feminine in the Japanese dub. There's no way that was "gender ambiguous" - she very obviously had a female voice actor.

And, for that matter, who says Hanji is supposed to be gender ambiguous in the first place? I'm confused, when was that ever said? Unless you're referring to the thing where the fans couldn't tell if Hanji was a boy or girl, so the author just said "fuck it, you choose" or something like that...

I think Romi Park was a great choice for Hanji. I don't mean she shouldn't sound like a woman, but that she should sound less like a typically feminine woman. I am so terrible at getting my point across.
Because she's not a typically feminine woman in any sense, and she has always been written and drawn as somewhat of an androgynous character? Portraying her as feminine just feels so out of character to me.

I liked Romi Park as Hanji, too. I just think she sounded like a Granted, women often play guys in anime, but to me there was no question that Hanji was a woman. I did like the slightly rougher quality of her voice and all, but it never made me question Hanji's gender, anyway.

I think I get what you're saying, though I have no problem with the English dub. And I know you don't mean it this way, but I think it's pretty unfair to say "typically feminine" - what exactly does that entail, especially in the world of Attack on Titan? Not many of the female characters could probably be called "typically feminine", depending on how stereotypical your criteria is. Hanji though has long hair, wider eyes and a thinner build, I'm not sure where beyond that we can define feminine, especially in the context of Attack on Titan.
