It's not even a question of horrible acting or not, Japanese and English voice acting have completely different styles that are neither comparable nor compatible.

They are certainly comparable, while they are different. I'm just curious as to why you're saying this to me, and not any of the anons here who say they think the Japanese dubs are so much better, if they are just not comparable nor compatible?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you also mentioned the quality of the acting, which isn't always necessarily "terrible but you just don't understand it" but instead just stylistically so different that it's not just a language thing, but a whole different cultural/style aspect. Japanese voice acting lives through over-acting and BIG EMOTION - if you do the same in, say, an English dub it just sounds silly.

But if you want I can go and copy-paste my answer to everyone else's post as well, whatever.

All voice acting depends on "over-acting", why you think that's a Japanese only thing boggles me. Of course quality can differ. I never said the quality of Japanese acting is worse, I said that fans who prefer subs wouldn't be able to tell if it was worse, anyway, and my point is that they are quick to judge English dubs, without realizing that Japanese acting isn't any better. And I've said I don't like "character" voices - and yeah, I speak Japanese, lived in Japan for years, and real people don't use those character voices. Why do I have to like them? They sound stupid. "Stylistic" isn't an automatic okay for anything. And I generally don't like boys/young men being voiced by women. Why does that get you so mad?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
But I'm not mad at all, you're the one who gets all excited about this. And no, the way overacting is done is not the same in those two languages. The 90s did the "let's imitate the way they do it" a lot and it ended in gems like "over 9000". As someone who understands a lot of Japanese and had some acting experience, I also know what I'm talking about. And of course normal Japanese people don't sound like anime VAs.

And I never said you had to like them - it probably got lost, but I basically agreed with you and only added that it's not just a matter of course"good" and "bad" but also of style. People often say "the dub is bad because it's not like the Japanese version" without understanding that, if done in the Japanese style of voice acting, it would sound much, much worse. But yeah, that probably wasn't very clear in my original comment.
