No but in the minds of society, even moreso 15 years ago, gay men and HIV are linked. Remember how the thing used to be called the "gay cancer"? Give your (older) gay character some tragedy? Go with AIDS. Metaphors work on societal perceptions, not facts.

Going by the age Lupin was infected (and other things like Remus being able to go to school only because of the kindness of Dumbledore), JKR was going more so for Ryan White than Rock Hudson. Also I can see the fandom accusing "traditional minded" JKR of making Greyback turn Remus gay with all the pedo molester parallels going on with Greyback.
