I'm not going to put the actual name here, because identification reasons, but I really like the last name a couple of my friends came up with for marriage. Instead of taking one or the other name, they went with a new combination. So "Firstname Lastname" and "Firstname SurnameEnding" became Mr. and Mrs. LastnameEnding. And the resulting name is also cool.

Oh, a portmanteau of the last names? That's cool, and if the names blend euphoniously it's less clunky than hyphenating.

I know a couple who kind of did this, too. They each had a short one syllable last name, and they combined them into one (like White and Stone became Whitestone, for example).

My friend's parents did that too, and it's what I hope to do (fingers crossed part of my partner's name works well with part of mine).
